MANCHESTER MAN GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AMID TROUBLED PAST
A 23-year-old man who committed sexual offenses against three children has avoided prison, citing his difficult childhood as a mitigating factor.Ashley Smith was given a 20-month suspended jail sentence after being found guilty of eight sexual charges at Minshull Street Crown Court on March 21.
His crimes took place when he was aged between 13 and 17.
One of the victims described how Smith threatened her and engaged in inappropriate acts, such as forcing his tongue into her mouth, touching her while having poor hygiene, and smelling like milk because he had been drinking milky tea.
The court also heard that Smith's troubled upbringing, including being placed in care, played a role in his actions.
As part of his sentence, he received a suspended term, 30 days of rehabilitation, 280 hours of unpaid community service, and restraining orders imposed to protect the victims.
Judge Mark Savill stressed the importance of adhering to the sentence and warned that if Smith reoffends, he could face up to 20 months in prison.
