Winchester Rapist
In January 2016, a disturbing case involving a convicted sex offender from Winchester captured public attention and prompted a series of legal proceedings that underscored the severity of his crimes. Ashley Orsborn, whose last known residence was listed as no fixed abode in Basingstoke, was found guilty of heinous acts committed against a young girl, beginning when she was just eight years old.

Orsborn’s criminal actions came to light during a trial held at Winchester Crown Court in March of that year. The court convicted him on two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault, leading to a substantial prison sentence of 17 years, complemented by an additional year on his license upon release. The gravity of his offenses was recognized by the court, reflecting the profound impact on his young victim.

Despite the conviction and the severity of the sentence, Orsborn’s legal representatives sought to challenge the length of his imprisonment. On the following Friday, he appeared via video link from prison at the Court of Appeal in London. His lawyers argued that the sentence was excessively harsh, claiming that while the victim had experienced psychological harm, it was not of the most severe kind. They contended that the punishment did not align with the actual harm suffered.

However, the appeal was firmly rejected by the panel of judges. Lord Justice Burnett, presiding over the case alongside Mr Justice Wyn Williams and Mr Justice Supperstone, emphasized the ongoing trauma experienced by the victim. He stated, “The subsequent events, as described by the victim’s GP and her mother, indicate not only that she has suffered severe psychological harm, but that it was appropriate for the judge to consider it to have been extreme.”

The victim, now aged 14, has endured a traumatic ordeal that continues to affect her well-being. The court’s decision reaffirmed the seriousness of her suffering and the appropriateness of the original sentence.

Following the sentencing, Simon Jones, the Senior Crown Advocate for the Crown Prosecution Service in Wessex, issued a statement highlighting the disturbing timeline of Orsborn’s crimes. He revealed that Orsborn was only 19 years old when he first committed his heinous acts against the young girl. Over the subsequent years, he committed additional offenses, including raping her again when she was 12 and sexually assaulting her on two separate occasions at the same age.

Jones emphasized the victim’s fear and silence, noting, “The child did not want to report to anyone what Ashley Orsborn did to her because she was too scared.” He pointed out that Orsborn exploited the girl’s vulnerability and young age, while he was able to continue with his life unimpeded, leaving her to carry the heavy burden of her secret.

In April 2016, the court officially sentenced Orsborn to 17 years in prison for his crimes. The case drew widespread attention to issues of child abuse and the importance of justice for victims. Jones concluded his statement by expressing hope that the victim and her family could now begin to rebuild their lives, free from the shadow of Orsborn’s crimes, and thanked all witnesses who supported the prosecution during the trial.
