ASHLEY MUMFORD FROM WERRINGTON ESCAPES PRISON AFTER SEXUAL NOTE INCIDENT INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN PETERBOROUGH

In a disturbing incident that took place in Peterborough, a man named Ashley Mumford, aged 27 and residing in Werrington, has been involved in an unsettling encounter with a young girl. On April 14 of this year, Mumford approached a 13-year-old girl as she was walking along the street and handed her a note that contained inappropriate and suggestive content.

The note explicitly stated that Mumford liked the look of her bottom and invited her to his house for 'a bit of fun.' It also included a request for her to keep the message secret, warning her not to tell anyone else about it. The young girl, visibly upset by the encounter, reported the incident immediately to the authorities.

Following her report, Mumford was swiftly arrested and charged with inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. During the court proceedings, he maintained that he was unaware of the girl’s age, claiming he did not realize she was only 13. Despite his denial, a jury found him guilty of the charge earlier this year after a trial.

At Peterborough Crown Court, Judge Sean Enright presided over the case. The judge described Mumford’s behavior as 'utterly disgraceful' and emphasized the serious nature of his actions. The court heard that Mumford’s conduct caused significant distress not only to the young girl but also to her mother, who was present in the courtroom.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Enright acknowledged that Mumford had no prior convictions, which contributed to his decision to avoid immediate imprisonment. Instead, he sentenced Mumford to a 36-week jail term, suspended for 18 months, and ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service. The judge also expressed his disappointment, stating, 'Your conduct is on any view utterly disgraceful. Your actions caused the girl tremendous distress, and also to her mother. No parent wants to find their child has been propositioned in this way or by an offender who may be nearby.'

Members of the victim’s family, who had been seated in the public gallery, were visibly emotional and chose to leave the court as the sentence was announced. Mumford, who was formally identified as being from Curlew Grove, Werrington, was given a stark warning about the gravity of his actions, which have left a lasting impact on the young girl and her family.
