ASAD MIRZA SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN LANCASHIRE AFTER BRAVE WOMAN'S COURAGE
A Lancashire woman demonstrated remarkable strength and composure as she confronted her attacker during the sentencing of Asad Mirza, who was convicted of raping her while she was asleep on his sofa.Judge Simon Medland publicly commended her bravery and resilience, emphasizing that no punishment could truly compensate for the harm she had endured.
Asad Mirza, a 36-year-old resident of Limbrick, Blackburn, faced justice in Preston Crown Court after a jury found him guilty of the crime during a trial held in January.
The incident, which occurred in November 2019, was briefly detailed during the sentencing hearing, revealing the seriousness and gravity of his actions.
The judge characterized Mirza’s attitude towards sexual relationships as flawed, asserting that he believed he was entitled to have sex with his victim regardless of her consent.
During the court proceedings, it was established that Mirza and his victim had shared some time together before the offending took place, and there was an apparent mutual sense of comfort.
Despite this, on the night in question, the woman was asleep at his residence when Mirza chose to engage in sexual activity without her agreement or awareness.
The court heard that the victim was unable to consent while unconscious, making his actions a clear violation of her rights.
In addressing Mirza directly, Judge Medland stated, “You were not entitled to do what you did as if it was your right.
She provided comprehensive and clear testimony to the jury, and the impact on her has been profound.” The judge emphasized that Mirza’s conduct was reckless concerning her lack of consent and highlighted the betrayal of trust involved in the case, especially since the victim was asleep at the time.
As a consequence, Mirza was sentenced to five years in prison.
Additionally, he was subject to a restraining order preventing any contact with his victim until further notice and was mandated to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
The court reiterated that the sentence aimed to reflect the severity of his misconduct and to protect the community.
Notably, the victim, who had displayed commendable courage by attending the sentencing hearing, received personal words of acknowledgment from Judge Medland.
He said, “No sentence I impose can make up for what happened to you.
I commend you on your conduct.
I can only hope that this will finally give you some closure, and that you will be able to move forward with your life.” The judge’s remarks underscored the importance of her bravery and the court’s hope for her future despite the trauma she endured.
