HARRASSSING ASAD KHAWAJA BANNED FROM CONTACTING EX PARTNER FOR TWO YEARS
A man sent his former partner a string of abusive texts and followed her in his car after she broke up with him.
Asad Khawaja, 53, pleaded guilty to harassment between April 19 and 30.
The court heard that Khawaja and Maureen Connor, who lives in the Birkby area, had been together for a year.
On April 20 she told him that the relationship was over and she didn’t want him in her home.
That caused a row and when Khawaja saw text messages from an ex-boyfriend, he accused her of cheating on him and became abusive.
The following day Ms Connor received several texts from Khawaja.
Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “This was about her having an affair.
She replied that she was not having an affair but reminded him that she did not want a relationship.
“Some of the messages were abusive and racist in nature.” On April 25, Khawaja, of London Road, in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, turned up at Ms Connor’s home but she refused to let him in.
Later the same day she caught a train to Leeds.
As she left the railway station he was sitting in his car waiting for her and offered her a lift but she refused.
Mrs Jones said: “On April 26 she was driving in Birkby and noticed him in the car behind, flashing his lights at her.
“He later sent her a text asking her why she didn’t stop, then a further text saying he was at Cedar Court Hotel and asking her to meet him for coffee.” Again, Ms Connor refused and he sent her abusive texts.
On April 29 he attended at her home again and messaged her to ask why she didn’t answer the door.
Ben Tighe, mitigating, said that a community order would help his client focus on his problem letting go of relationships and focus on boundaries.
Magistrates sentenced him to a community order with 50 days of activities as a direct alternative to custody.
Khawaja must also complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £85 court costs, £150 court charge and £60 victim surcharge.
Finally, magistrates made a restraining order banning him from contacting Ms Connor for two years.
