ARTHUR HATTON OF LEWISHAM SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN CHILDREN'S HOMES

In a case that has shocked the Lewisham community and beyond, Arthur Hatton, an 88-year-old former worker at children’s homes in Lewisham, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a vulnerable young boy. The conviction was handed down at Woolwich Crown Court, where Hatton received a sentence of 16 years in prison, a punishment that many believe will likely see him spend the remainder of his life behind bars.

Hatton’s crimes date back to the period between 1975 and 1982, during which he was employed as the superintendent at two children’s homes in Lewisham. Over these years, he repeatedly assaulted a young boy, who was between the ages of six and 15 at the time. The abuse spanned nearly a decade, with the victim enduring a series of traumatic experiences at the hands of Hatton, who was entrusted with his care.

The police became aware of the allegations in July 2014, following media coverage related to an unrelated investigation into historic sex abuse cases. This media attention prompted a thorough investigation, which ultimately led to Hatton’s arrest in November 2014. The case drew significant media attention, highlighting the long-lasting impact of childhood abuse and the importance of justice for victims.

Detective Sergeant Sam Townsend commented on the case, stating that it is “highly likely” Hatton will die in prison. He emphasized the severity of the crimes, saying, “Hatton has been found guilty of some truly evil crimes against a vulnerable child who should have been safe in his care.” Townsend also expressed hope that the conviction would serve as a message to others, reaffirming that law enforcement agencies remain committed to investigating all allegations of abuse, regardless of when they occurred or the age of the offender.

During the trial, Hatton was convicted on multiple counts, including three counts of indecent assault on a boy under 16, four counts of buggery with a boy under 16, and four counts of gross indecency with a boy under 14. The jury also considered allegations involving four additional victims, although Hatton was found not guilty of six indecent assault charges related to one victim and the jury was unable to reach a verdict on three other counts involving three different victims. The case underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing historic abuse cases and ensuring justice for victims who come forward after many years.
