ARFON OWEN FROM SHELDON AND TALYBONT SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR HISTORIC SEX OFFENCES IN NORTH WALES

In a significant case that has resonated throughout North Wales, Arfon Owen, a man with longstanding ties to Sheldon and Talybont, has been sentenced to a 20-year prison term after being convicted of multiple historic sexual offences committed against two young girls. Owen, aged 73, who has resided in Talybont since the early 1990s, was originally from Sheldon, where the crimes took place over a span of more than a decade, from 1976 to 1992.

His conviction followed a comprehensive week-long trial held in July, during which he faced a total of 19 charges. The court found him guilty of 11 counts of rape and eight counts of indecent assault. However, he was acquitted of one charge, which involved unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13. The verdict underscores the severity of the offences and the meticulous legal process that led to his conviction.

Detective Constable Vicky Kelleher, who was involved in the investigation, issued a statement emphasizing the importance of the victims' bravery. She explained, “Owen’s crimes came to light in early 2012 when his two victims found the courage to report the appalling abuse he had inflicted upon them.”

She further highlighted that Owen had consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the investigation. It was ultimately the courageous testimonies of the victims that proved pivotal in securing his conviction and subsequent sentencing. “He steadfastly denied his guilt, so it was down to the brave testimonies of the girls which secured his conviction and saw him sentenced to a very lengthy jail term,” she stated.

In her remarks, Detective Kelleher expressed hope that the case would encourage others who might be suffering in silence to come forward. She reassured the public that support services are available to assist victims of sexual and domestic abuse. “We have a range of support services available from the police and a raft of other agencies. We have specially trained and experienced officers who can offer practical advice and support in all aspects of sexual and domestic abuse,” she added.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to bring justice to victims of sexual violence, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.
