Isle of Arran Sexual Abuser
In June 2017, a man was found guilty of serious sexual offences involving a young girl, with the proceedings taking place at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court. The individual in question is Archibald ‘Stewart’ Thornton, aged 53, who hails from Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Known locally by his first name, Stewart, Thornton faced charges related to disturbing and unlawful conduct towards a female child.

During the court session, it was revealed that the offences occurred during the 1980s, spanning a period of approximately three years. The charges specifically pertain to acts of lewd, indecent, and libidinous behaviour committed against a young girl who was between the ages of four and seven at the time of the incidents.

The court heard detailed accounts of Thornton’s misconduct, which involved inappropriate actions towards the young girl over an extended period. The gravity of the offences was underscored by the fact that they involved a minor, and the case has been a matter of concern for the local community on the Isle of Arran.

Following the conviction, Thornton was ordered to register as a sex offender, a legal requirement for individuals convicted of such crimes. The sentencing phase has been scheduled for a later date, during which further penalties or conditions may be imposed. The case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to address and prosecute sexual offences, especially those involving vulnerable minors.
