ARCHIBALD DONAGHY'S DISTURBING STALKING SPREE IN GLASGOW: CHILDREN'S FEAR AND JUSTICE SERVED
In August 2018, a disturbing case of predatory behavior unfolded in Glasgow, involving a pensioner who targeted an 11-year-old girl during her daily walk to school.The man, identified as Archibald Donaghy, aged 61, engaged in a series of unsettling actions that left the young girl terrified and deeply distressed.
According to court reports, Donaghy followed the girl as she made her way home from school, approaching her with inappropriate gestures of kindness.
On one occasion, he handed her a £2 note, suggesting she use it to buy herself something.
The following day, he was observed waiting for her along her route to school, where he handed her a plastic container that contained a bottle of juice, additional money, and a handwritten note that read, “Have a good day at school beautiful.” What made the situation even more alarming was Donaghy’s subsequent behavior.
He walked alongside the girl, engaging her in conversation and asking to cuddle her, actions that clearly caused her significant fear.
On that same day, he twice attempted to lure her into his car, offering her rides.
The young girl, overwhelmed by fear, managed to run home and immediately informed her mother about the encounters.
Donaghy, a stranger to the girl, was later identified and apprehended by police.
He was charged with multiple counts of stalking the girl over a period spanning from March 14 to March 15, within the Calton and Dennistoun districts of Glasgow.
During his appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Donaghy pleaded guilty to the charges, admitting to the repeated stalking incidents.
Sheriff Paul Crozier sentenced Donaghy to 20 months in prison, emphasizing the severity of his actions.
In his remarks, the sheriff stated, “Your conduct on March 14 and 15 was terrifying.
Your conduct towards her, as accepted by you in tendering your plea, has caused her great upset.
Thankfully she had the good sense to run away.” The sheriff further condemned Donaghy’s behavior, declaring, “You are a danger, Mr.
Donaghy, so far as I am concerned, to young children.” In addition to his prison sentence, Donaghy was issued a five-year non-harassment order, prohibiting any contact with the girl or similar conduct in the future.
He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years.
The police had gathered evidence against him through CCTV footage captured in the area, which confirmed his presence during the incidents.
Following his arrest, Donaghy was detained at his residence, where he made “relevant admissions” during police interviews, despite initially denying any wrongdoing by claiming, “I’m innocent, I’ve done nothing wrong.”
