LONDON MAN JAILED FOR STABBING FIANCÉE TO DEATH IN ‘SENSELESS KILLING’
A 33-year-old man, Arben Rexha, was sentenced to ten years behind bars after killing his fiancée, Elidona Demiraj, by stabbing her in their shared flat in Angel. The assault occurred on January 31, 2016, in Jessop Court near City Road Basin.
Ms Demiraj, aged 25, had come to London from Albania just three months earlier, and it is believed that the killing was connected to an arranged marriage.
Rexha pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility during a hearing at the Old Bailey; his sentencing was delayed to allow for a psychiatric evaluation.
Police responded to a call from Rexha just before midnight and found him with arms outstretched, prepared to be arrested.
He later claimed that mental health issues contributed to the attack and was diagnosed with schizophrenia while in custody.
Ms Demiraj was found suffering from multiple stab wounds to her neck and was declared dead at the scene.
The case shocked the Albanian community, with Detective Inspector Paul Considine calling it a “senseless death of a defenseless young woman who had her whole life ahead of her.”
