CHELTENHAM MAN JAILED FOR YEARS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AND ASSAULT
A man received a sentence of three and a half years in prison after subjecting his partner to extended physical and emotional abuse, along with threatening to throw acid on her.Antony J Scott, aged 42 and a resident of Mill Lane in Cheltenham, appeared before Gloucester Crown Court on Tuesday (6 February), where he was convicted and subsequently sentenced.
Additionally, he was given a 10-year restraining order preventing him from making contact with the victim.
Violating this order could lead to a prison sentence of up to five years.
During the trial, court proceedings revealed that Scott inflicted severe physical injuries and emotional trauma on the woman over their relationship, committing physical assaults at least six times.
One such incident involved Scott grabbing the steering wheel while she was driving along the A40 in Cheltenham, causing the vehicle to swerve, followed by punching her thigh.
Fearing further violence, she pulled the handbrake to escape, but Scott pulled her hair and pushed her head between the seats.
In another occurrence, Scott entered a room where she was on the phone, shouted at her, pushed her into furniture, and then shattered her phone on the bedframe, with her hair remaining on the floor days afterward.
Despite denying the allegations, Scott was found guilty by a jury after a three-week trial on two counts of coercive and controlling behavior and one charge of witness intimidation, where he threatened to throw acid if she testified in court.
The victim testified about how the abuse affected her mental health, stating her self-esteem and confidence had been severely damaged.
The authorities highlighted the seriousness and brutality of Scott’s actions, acknowledging the victim’s bravery in coming forward.
The judge noted Scott's tactics of humiliation and control, as well as the physical and financial harm inflicted, including bruises and hair loss, often witnessed in front of their young daughter.
The case underscores the importance of encouraging victims to seek assistance and demonstrates the strong support available from Gloucestershire Constabulary.
