The 48-year-old was arrested after police raided his May Bank home and found the a file named ‘Kiddie Porn’ although there were no pictures there.

However, officers did uncover 53 category A images – the most serious – 100 at category B and 588 category C images.

Now Fern, who has health and social difficulties, has been handed a three-year community order at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

Prosecutor Richard McConaghy said police executed a search warrant at the defendant’s address in Marsh Court, Highfield Avenue, May Bank, on January 29 last year.

Mr McConaghy said: “He answered the door.

He was asked if he was aware of indecent images being accessed from the address.

He said he was.

Police seized his computer tower, a hard drive and two tablets from the address.

“The images were found on the computer tower.

One of the tablets had two inaccessible images – one category A and one category C.

The second tablet did not contain images of children but searches for extreme pornography.

“The computer tower had references to folders, ‘Kiddie Porn’ and ‘Kiddie Porn Videos’.

They were empty.

There was no evidence of videos being found.

“The category A images found were mostly of a girl aged three to four.” Fern, of Highfield Avenue, May Bank, pleaded guilty to three offences of making indecent photographs of a child between December 30, 2015 and January 29, 2019.

As part of the community order Fern must complete a rehabilitation activity requirement for 30 days and the Horizon sex offenders’ programme.
