YORK WOMAN JAILED FOR SEVEN YEARS FOR BRUTAL ABUSE OF SISTER-IN-LAW
Antonia Pearson-Gaballonie, aged 35, of New Lane, Holgate, York, has been convicted and sentenced for a prolonged campaign of abuse against her sister-in-law, Veronica Sandeman.The victim endured horrific physical and emotional torment, including being kept prisoner in her own home, being repeatedly beaten, bruised, and assaulted with weapons such as scissors and a rolling pin.
Veronica Sandeman, a 26-year-old nanny and mother of six, described her ordeal as one of unimaginable cruelty inflicted by Pearson-Gaballonie, her own sister-in-law.
She recounted how Pearson-Gaballonie would force her to clean while naked, make her eat dog food, whip her with a belt, and even threaten her with a bread knife.
The abuse escalated on Christmas Day, when her attacker dragged her into a bedroom, cut her hair with scissors, beat her with a rolling pin and belt, and held a knife to her throat.
Veronica described her attacker as 'an evil woman' who is 'mentally unbalanced.' After her escape, Veronica, described by a neighbor as 'skeletal' and 'beaten to within an inch of her life,' managed to flee and seek police help.
Pearson-Gaballonie was charged with causing actual bodily harm, false imprisonment, and making threats to kill.
The court sentenced her to seven years in prison, acknowledging her manipulative and cunning behavior from the judge.
Neil Pearson, her husband, received a sentence of two years for his involvement.
The case drew commendations from police for Veronica’s courage and determination, and it highlighted social services' efforts to support the family after her imprisonment.
An eviction notice was served on the family home, and the family’s future remains uncertain as social services and the housing association work to find suitable arrangements for the children.
