ANTHONY WOODS FROM DUBLIN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON GIRLFRIEND'S 11-YEAR-OLD SISTER
In a case that has shocked the community of Dublin, Anthony Woods, aged 23, of Jamestown Road, Inchicore, was sentenced to a decade behind bars for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against his then-girlfriend's 11-year-old sister. The incident, which took place in May 2004, culminated in Woods being found guilty after a rigorous seven-day trial at the Central Criminal Court.
Woods was convicted of multiple charges, including rape, oral rape, and aggravated sexual assault, all involving the young girl, who is now 13 years old.
The victim and her family publicly expressed their desire for Woods to be named in the media, emphasizing the importance of justice and awareness in cases of child sexual abuse.
During the sentencing hearing, Mr.
Justice Diarmuid O’Donovan delivered a powerful statement, condemning Woods’ actions.
He stated, “You robbed an 11-year-old girl of her virginity and her trust in men.” The judge highlighted that Woods had initially admitted to the Gardaí (Irish police) about the crime but later changed his plea to not guilty, forcing the young girl to undergo the distressing process of cross-examination in court.
Mr.
Justice O’Donovan acknowledged the emotional toll on the victim, noting her fears of not being believed and her distress during her testimony, which included shedding tears.
The judge also pointed out that the girl had difficulty being alone in a room with men, reflecting the deep psychological scars left by the assault.
He emphasized that the severity of Woods’ crime warranted a strong sentence, stating that it would be a disservice to justice not to reflect the gravity of the offense in his punishment.
Details of the incident reveal that Woods had been out at a pub on the evening of the attack.
His then-girlfriend, who was with him, arranged for her sister to babysit.
After Woods returned home alone, he carried out the assault.
The young girl was first assaulted and then raped by Woods.
Following this, he forced her onto the bed and assaulted her again.
The victim later confided in a friend about the ordeal, and it was this friend who encouraged her to go to a Garda station to report the crime.
The case was brought to justice, and Woods was sentenced to ten years for each of the rape and oral rape charges, and eight years for the aggravated sexual assault.
All sentences are to run concurrently, and Woods’ application for leave to appeal was denied, sealing his fate.
This case underscores the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and judicial processes in protecting vulnerable victims and delivering justice.
