ANTHONY WARD FROM EDINBURGH CHARGED WITH CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
A disturbing case has emerged involving Anthony Ward, a resident of Edinburgh, who appeared before the sheriff's court this week facing serious allegations related to child exploitation and possession of indecent material.The court was informed that Ward, aged 66, was found to have downloaded over 85,000 graphic images and videos depicting the sexual abuse and torture of children during a police raid on his Edinburgh residence last year.
The investigation revealed that the collection of illicit videos, which included extremely disturbing content, had a total duration of approximately 21 hours and 13 minutes.
This extensive collection underscores the severity of the offences and the level of depravity involved.
The police also uncovered evidence that Ward had been actively engaging with minors on an online video platform, where he coerced children into performing solo sexual acts.
These actions further compound the gravity of his criminal behavior.
During the court proceedings, Ward’s defense lawyer, Christopher McFarlane, addressed the court, highlighting Ward’s troubled history and personal circumstances.
He pointed out that Ward had previously served a ten-year prison sentence for a similar offence, indicating a pattern of entrenched deviant behavior.
McFarlane also emphasized Ward’s current role as the full-time carer for his 94-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia and arthritis, and expressed concern about his ability to prepare for his upcoming trial.
McFarlane requested that bail be granted, arguing that Ward needed time to manage his personal affairs and to say goodbye to his ailing mother, who is nearing the end of her life.
He stated, “I am asking for bail to be continued so that Mr.
Ward can get his affairs in order.
Given his mother’s age and frailty, Mr.
Ward is under no illusion that it is very likely his mother will pass away while he is in a custodial environment and that causes him great shame.
If bail is continued, and if the court is minded to impose a custodial sentence, it will give him time to say his goodbyes.” However, Sheriff Charles Walls dismissed the plea, citing the seriousness of the charges.
The sheriff stated, “In view of the gravity of these charges as narrated, there is a likelihood of a custodial sentence.
I am not prepared to admit you to bail and you will be remanded in custody.” Anthony Ward, who resides in the Calder area of Edinburgh, was subsequently remanded in custody.
He has been placed on an interim sex offenders register, and a full sentencing hearing has been scheduled for later this month, where the court will determine the appropriate punishment for his actions.
