ANTHONY PULAMI'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN SCARBOROUGH: PAEDOPHILE DIES BEFORE SENTENCING IN YORK
In a tragic turn of events, Anthony Dhiren Pulami, also known during the time of his crimes as Tony Earnshaw, passed away before he could be formally sentenced for his heinous offenses. The crimes, which spanned over a decade, involved the sexual abuse of young boys in the seaside town of Scarborough during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Pulami, aged 76 at the time of his death, was scheduled to appear before York Crown Court on a Monday to face charges of three counts of indecent assault and one count of serious sexual assault.
However, he died while in custody at Hull Prison, prior to the hearing, effectively ending the legal proceedings against him.
The charges stemmed from two separate periods of abuse, with one victim targeted between 1976 and 1978, and the other between 1979 and 1985, both incidents taking place within the boundaries of Scarborough.
According to reports, Pulami exploited his involvement with motorcycles to gain the trust of his young victims.
He groomed them by offering gifts and taking them on outings, only to later sexually abuse them.
The bravery of the victims in coming forward was instrumental in bringing the case to light.
One victim reported the abuse to North Yorkshire Police in 2016, followed by the second victim in 2017, many years after the crimes occurred.
At the time of the police reports, Pulami was residing abroad, living in Nepal and later in India.
A lengthy five-year investigation was conducted by North Yorkshire Police, involving collaboration with the Force Intelligence Bureau, the National Crime Agency, and the Crown Prosecution Service’s Extradition Unit.
This extensive effort ultimately led to Pulami’s arrest in September 2021 when Indian authorities facilitated his return to the UK.
In January, Pulami pleaded guilty to the charges during a court hearing.
Despite his guilty plea, he died on April 28 while on remand at Hull Prison, before he could be sentenced.
The scheduled hearing at York Crown Court proceeded as planned, and the case was officially concluded with his death.
Detective Constable Catherine Peet, of Scarborough and Ryedale CID, commented on the case, stating, “At the time when the victims made their reports to the police, the suspect was living abroad in Nepal and then moved to India.
Over these years, this case has required ongoing work with our Force Intelligence Bureau, the National Crime Agency, and the Crown Prosecution Service’s Extradition Unit to progress the return of the offender.
Following enquiries by the Indian authorities, Pulami was arrested in connection with these offences when he came back to the UK in September 2021.
Neither of the victims had been able to share their traumatic experiences until the start of the police investigation many years later.
Pulami’s crimes have deeply affected them throughout their life.”
