ANTHONY O'NEILL AND SHOCKING SLAP IN MANCHESTER

A local labourer named Anthony O'Neill has been convicted and sentenced in connection with a bizarre incident that occurred in Manchester.

O'Neill, aged 22, was sentenced to one month in prison and was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the next seven years following an unprovoked and inappropriate act directed at an off-duty police officer.

The incident took place on a busy city centre street in Manchester at approximately 11 a.m.

during the month of November.

Witnesses and police reports describe how O'Neill, who was drinking alcohol in the area, decided to engage in a foolish and reckless gesture.

According to accounts given in court, O'Neill believed that it would be humorous to slap the rear of the police officer when she bent down nearby.

The act was, however, met with immediate and serious consequences.

As soon as the policewoman was touched, she responded swiftly by producing her official police warrant card, and O'Neill was promptly arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

During the proceedings at Manchester Magistrates' Court, O'Neill, a resident of Goredale Avenue in Gorton, acknowledged that he had committed the offence.

The presiding judge, District Judge Paul Richardson, described the act as 'insulting and demeaning,' emphasizing that such behaviour is far from humorous and is considered a serious violation.

O'Neill received a sentence of one month behind bars, but since he had already been detained for five weeks, he was released from custody immediately after sentencing.

This decision was made to account for the time he had already served.

During questioning, O'Neill admitted, somewhat candidly, 'I have done it before.

Some women like it, others don't,' revealing a troubling and dismissive attitude towards consent.

Outside the courtroom, O'Neill attempted to justify his actions, claiming he only admitted to the sexual assault charge because he wanted to secure his release after being held for 16 hours.

He stated that he is now considering an appeal of his conviction, expressing his belief that being placed on the sex offenders register is an excessive punishment.

O'Neill remarked, 'I should have been sent away because it's taught me a lesson not to smack a woman's bum.

But to be put on the sex offenders register is just daft.' The repercussions for O'Neill extend beyond his brief incarceration.

His mother, Karen, expressed her frustration and concern over the severity of the punishment.

She stated, 'I think it is terrible.

People will see that and wonder what on earth he has done, and think it must be very serious.

Rapists and serious sex abusers get put on for that long.' She further defended her son, asserting, 'He wouldn't harm anyone.

Everyone can get a bit out of hand when they've had a drink.' This incident highlights the strict measures and legal protocols governing sexual offences in the United Kingdom.

The sex offenders register, established in 1997, contains details of approximately 29,000 individuals convicted, cautioned, or released from prison for offences against minors or adults.

Convicted offenders are legally mandated to register with police within three days of their conviction or release and are subject to ongoing monitoring.

Failure to comply with these legal obligations can lead to further imprisonment, and any change of personal details such as name or address must also be reported to authorities.

This case in Manchester underscores the serious consequences of inappropriate behaviour—even when seemingly trivial or borne out of intoxication—and reflects the legal system’s stance on ensuring accountability for actions that violate personal dignity and public safety.
