June 2008 Man jailed for abusing Cork schoolgirl A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually exploiting a 15-year-old girl. A father of eight who pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting a 15-year-old girl on the night of her Junior Cert results and making an explicit videotape has been sentenced to two years in prison, with the last 12 months suspended. Anthony Nagle, from Nicholas Square in Ballymacthomas, appeared before the Circuit Criminal Court in Cork. The court heard that the victim had been out celebrating in September 2005 when Anthony Nagle – a friend of her mother’s – invited her back to his flat to collect some DVDs. Nagle, who is 48, bought her cigarettes and 24 bottles of WKD alcohol and after he had sex with her, began filming the teenager as they engaged in further sexual activity. The court was told that during the evening, the girl’s mother rang frantic with worry because her daughter had not arrived home at teatime as planned. He told her not to worry that she was probable still out celebrating her results. Asked by gardaí later why he did not tell her the truth, he said he just wanted to have sex with the teenager. The incident came to light when the teenager’s mother found a letter which her daughter had written to her detailing what she remembered had happened on the night. The court was told she could not bear to tell her mother directly. When gardaí called to Nagle’s flat they found the tape in a safe – labelled with the girl’s name and dated. The court was told that Nagle had never shown any remorse for his actions. A victim of child abuse, alcoholic and suicidal Nagle told the court that he was drinking heavily at the time and thought she was over the age of consent and he apologised to her. Taking in account his plea and that he saved the victim giving evidence, Judge Patrick Moran said this girl was subject to a harmful experience and all sorts of sexual activity that was recorded and put in a safe. He sentence him to two years in prison, suspending the final 12 months, with his name to be put on the Sex Offender’s Register for 10 years.
