ANTHONY METCALFE AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER CASE IN HARTLEPOOL
A convicted sex offender, Anthony Metcalfe, has been sentenced to prison after engaging in illicit communications with under-16 girls through a clandestine digital device.The incident occurred in Hartlepool, where Metcalfe was found to have used a concealed tablet to contact young girls, despite being under strict legal restrictions aimed at protecting minors.
Metcalfe, aged 34, had been a registered sex offender for life since his conviction in 2015 for three separate sexual assaults involving children.
Despite this, he continued to pursue inappropriate interactions with minors.
In his conversations on Snapchat, he adopted a false identity or alias to conceal his true identity from the girls.
According to court reports, the conversations involved inappropriate comments such as 'nice bum' and 'beautiful,' which clearly indicated an intent to sexualize or exploit the young recipients.
His contact with these minors was in direct breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) imposed on him in 2015.
This order explicitly prohibited any form of contact with children.
The violation of this legal restriction led to further criminal proceedings.
The situation was exposed following a police visit on May 10, when an officer, acting as part of the offender management team, discovered a secret digital tablet in an outhouse behind a relative’s house in Hartlepool.
The police subsequently retrieved the device and found evidence of numerous contacts with minors.
During a comprehensive check of the defendant’s digital communications, police uncovered a list of Snapchat contacts, among whom six were under the age of 16.
These included two 15-year-olds, three 13-year-olds, and one child just 12 years old.
The messages sent by Metcalfe to these young girls included flirtatious comments, like ‘nice bum’ and ‘beautiful,’ which are clearly inappropriate and in violation of the conditions he was mandated to follow.
Rachel Masters, prosecuting, emphasized that these messages directly contravened the terms of his SHPO.
She noted that the discovery of the tablet was a crucial moment in confirming the breach and the illegal interactions.
The court was also briefed on Metcalfe’s extensive criminal history, which includes 25 convictions encompassing 47 separate offences.
Among these was an incident where he did not disclose his status as a sex offender when visiting a mother at her home, further demonstrating a pattern of non-compliance and dishonesty.
In his defense, Stephen Constantine argued that Metcalfe might suffer from underlying mental health issues that he had kept concealed for years.
He highlighted that his client had entered guilty pleas to all the charges at the earliest available opportunity, which he suggested was a mitigating factor.
The pre-sentence report hinted at possible mental health concerns that could have influenced his behavior.
After reviewing the case, Judge Howard Crowson sentenced Anthony Metcalfe to a period of two years and eight months in prison for the breaches.
In his remarks, the judge expressed serious concern about the ongoing risks associated with Metcalfe.
He stated, “Given your history, I have a real anxiety about the risk that you pose.
These are serious and persistent breaches, contact with six different children, some really young and at risk of very serious harm,” emphasizing the gravity of the violations and the potential danger to vulnerable minors in Hartlepool.
