CONTROLLING EX-PARTNER WITH A VIOLENT PAST JAILED FOR COERCIVE BEHAVIOR
A man named Anthony Marshall from Pencader was convicted of controlling and coercive behaviors in a relationship, which caused his former partner to feel afraid for her life. His actions included sending her excessive messages, demanding continuous communication, and tracking her location.
Court proceedings revealed that he exhibited possessive and obsessive tendencies, such as installing WhatsApp on her phone without permission to monitor her, calling her multiple times each day, and requesting CCTV footage to ensure she was not speaking to other men.
He also followed her and issued threats, including stating he would kill her if he saw her with another man.
Following his release from prison, where he served time for assault, Marshall arranged to pick her up but was delayed, and he accused her of being fixated on another man.
The court heard he remained at her address after his release, an admission he made, though he denied putting WhatsApp on her phone, claiming his paranoia stemmed from mental health issues and drug use.
At 30 years old, Marshall has 26 previous convictions for 59 offences, among them assaults on past partners and the complainant.
The judge sentenced him to 16 months in prison for controlling and coercive conduct, and issued a five-year restraining order, citing his possessive and jealous behavior.
