ANTHONY GIBSON'S SHOCKING CRIME IN EDINBURGH AND FIFE LEADS TO 5-YEAR SENTENCE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Edinburgh and Fife, Anthony Gibson, aged 23, has been sentenced to a total of five years and eight months in prison for a heinous sexual assault that resulted in a teenage girl becoming pregnant. The incident took place in an Edinburgh hostel, where Gibson, who was then residing in Kirkcaldy, committed the assault in August of this year.
Gibson’s victim was only 16 years old at the time of the attack.
The court heard that after the assault, the girl confided in friends and family about her ordeal, prompting Gibson to threaten her by warning, “You better have a good lawyer.” He also engaged in a disturbing series of text messages, attempting to deny the assault.
In one message, he claimed to have been to the police and insisted he had not slept with her.
Advocate depute Alison Di Rollo detailed to the High Court in Edinburgh that Gibson sent at least ten texts questioning why the girl was accusing him of rape, to which she responded that she was claiming rape because he had indeed assaulted her.
Scientific evidence later confirmed that Gibson was the biological father of the child the girl was carrying.
The court was told that the assault not only left her pregnant but also caused her significant emotional trauma.
The judge, Lord Turnbull, condemned Gibson’s actions, stating, “You perpetrated a determined rape on a vulnerable teenager who was little more than a child.
To make matters worse, your act resulted in her pregnancy and she had to undergo the procedures of terminating the pregnancy.” Lord Turnbull further criticized Gibson’s lack of remorse, emphasizing that his conduct appeared driven solely by selfish desires.
The judge noted that Gibson was not ashamed or remorseful during the proceedings and explained that, had he not pleaded guilty, he would have faced a sentence of approximately eight and a half years.
Although Gibson initially denied having sex with the girl when questioned by police, DNA testing following her termination confirmed paternity.
Subsequently, he admitted to raping her.
The court heard that Gibson, who has prior convictions for assault, was on bail at the time of the attack.
He was released following a sheriff’s decision after an earlier allegation involving a knife.
The assault occurred after Gibson, who was staying at the same hostel as the victim, was introduced to her by another resident.
He then invited her to his room, where the assault took place.
The girl testified that she did not think much of the invitation, as residents often sat in each other’s bedrooms, but she told Gibson to stop and get off her during the attack.
Despite her protests, Gibson continued, and after the assault, he behaved as if nothing had happened, even standing beside a mirror and having another drink.
The court was also informed of the severe psychological impact the assault had on the victim.
Ms.
Di Rollo explained that she became “severely depressed” following the incident and her pregnancy termination.
The girl attempted to take her own life with an overdose and was hospitalized for two weeks.
She has since suffered panic attacks and has not entered into any romantic relationships since the attack, citing trust issues with men and a reluctance to pursue future relationships.
Gibson’s presence at the hostel and his interaction with the victim were described as casual, with the victim not initially perceiving any danger.
However, the court was told that Gibson’s actions were predatory and calculated.
Despite her protests, he persisted, and the assault left lasting scars on her mental health.
As part of his sentence, Gibson was also ordered to register as a sex offender, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
