May 2009 Sex offender has minimum jail term cut A SEX offender from Notts who used his home as a “honeytrap” to lure in children has had his jail term cut by appeal judges. Anthony Bidmead, 38, of Oak Avenue, Blidworth, was locked up in January 2008 with his partner, Simon Clinch. Bidmead, who was a repeat offender, had earlier pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual activity with a child and possessing indecent photos of males under the age of 18. He was given a minimum five-year jail term at Derby Crown Court. Last year Clinch was successful in having his sentence cut from six to four years. Bidmead also appealed and today won a year’s reduction in his minimum period of imprisonment. Judge James Wadsworth QC, at the Court of Appeal, said the term imposed by the sentencing judge was too long for the offences he committed. But he warned that the new four-year term was simply a minimum, and Bidmead could potentially stay behind bars for longer if the Parole Board deemed it necessary. He said: “We stress that four years is a minimum term and the amount of time eventually served will be a matter for review as appropriate.” Bidmead and Clinch, who also admitted sexual activity with a child, had converted rooms at their Blidworth home for homosexual activities, including a so-called “Egyptian room” with an adjoining hot tub and sauna. At crown court, the sentencing judge said Bidmead and Clinch had set up the home to be a “sort of honeytrap for young children”. When the police searched the house they found a video showing sex acts between men and young males.
