ANTHONY ANDREWS FROM ROCHDALE JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN CARE HOMES

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Rochdale and the wider Greater Manchester area, Anthony Andrews, a residential care worker, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison following a serious conviction related to sexual misconduct.

The conviction stems from a lengthy investigation into abuse within care homes across Greater Manchester, known as Operation Cleopatra, which uncovered disturbing allegations against Andrews.

Anthony Andrews, aged 57 and residing on Back Chapel Street, Wardle, near Rochdale, was found guilty of indecently assaulting a 14-year-old boy.

The victim had been placed in care due to violence at his home, seeking refuge and support within the care system.

The court heard that Andrews, who was employed at the Foxholes Children’s Home in Rochdale during the 1980s, exploited the trust placed in him by the young boy, engaging in inappropriate and criminal behavior.

Judge Michael Henshell delivered a stern verdict at Manchester Crown Court, emphasizing the gravity of Andrews' actions.

He stated, “He was placed in your trust and you abused that trust.

These were clearly serious offences committed in a clear breach of the trust placed in you by your employers and they grossly violated the trust and affection you encouraged in that boy.” The judge’s words underscored the betrayal of trust and the harm inflicted upon the vulnerable victim.

Prosecutor Maurice Green detailed how Andrews behaved in a manipulative manner, acting as if he was the boy’s close friend.

He would take the young boy on trips and outings, fostering a false sense of companionship and security.

Andrews instructed the boy to keep their interactions secret, leading the victim to believe that Andrews was simply looking out for him and providing care.

This grooming process was part of the abuse that ultimately led to Andrews’ arrest.

The investigation into Andrews’ conduct was part of a broader effort by Greater Manchester Police to uncover systemic abuse within care homes.

The operation aimed to identify and hold accountable staff members who had exploited their positions of authority over vulnerable children.

Andrews was questioned about the allegations but consistently maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

Following his conviction, the prosecution chose not to pursue additional charges related to allegations that Andrews had also sexually abused two other children in care.

The case highlights the ongoing issues of safeguarding within the care system and the importance of vigilance in protecting children from exploitation and abuse.

Andrews’ sentencing marks a significant step in addressing past abuses and reinforcing the need for accountability within institutions entrusted with the care of young and vulnerable individuals.
