ANTHONY AND LUCY O’DONNELL'S HORRIFIC PUPPY DEALING SCAM IN SIDCUP REVEALED

Anthony and Lucy O’Donnell, both born around 1986 and residing at the Old Maidstone Road Caravan Site in Sidcup, have been convicted of heinous crimes related to the sale of severely ill puppies. The couple’s involvement in this disturbing case came to light after investigations revealed their role in selling puppies that were suffering from severe health issues, ultimately leading to the death of many of these young dogs.

In 2017, both Anthony and Lucy O’Donnell pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to dogs and neglecting the basic needs of 11 puppies. The court heard that their actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for animal welfare, prioritizing profit over the health and well-being of the animals they sold. Lucy O’Donnell also admitted to a separate offence of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation, further implicating her in the criminal activities.

The RSPCA’s involvement in uncovering this case began in December 2015, when the charity’s cruelty line received multiple calls from concerned members of the public. These callers reported that puppies they had purchased from the O’Donnells’ address had died within days of being brought home. The reports prompted a thorough investigation led by RSPCA inspector Carroll Lamport.

Inspector Lamport recounted that twelve individuals who had bought puppies from the same address contacted the charity, expressing concern about the health of their dogs. Many of these puppies fell ill shortly after arriving at their new homes, and tragically, all but two of the twelve puppies died. This pattern of illness and death raised serious questions about the conditions and practices at the O’Donnells’ property.

To gather evidence, the RSPCA conducted an undercover operation. Officers posed as prospective buyers, with one couple visiting the O’Donnells’ location to purchase a puppy as a birthday gift. During the encounter, Lucy O’Donnell was met at the side of a road, where after a brief exchange of questions, the couple handed over cash and received a tiny puppy. This puppy was later adopted by a caring family, ensuring it received proper care.

Subsequently, authorities executed a warrant at the O’Donnells’ residence. During the search, they discovered approximately 50 dogs and puppies living on the property. Despite the large number of animals, no illegal activity was immediately evident regarding their treatment or ownership, so none were seized at that time. However, the investigation focused on the sick puppies sold by the couple, which led to their prosecution.

Inspector Lamport expressed his dismay over the case, stating, “It’s heartbreaking to think this couple put money and profits ahead of the welfare of these poor pups. Their failure to implement a disease control program and provide necessary treatment resulted in the tragic loss of 10 puppies.”

In sentencing, Lucy O’Donnell received a two-year prison term and was disqualified from keeping animals for ten years. Her husband, Anthony O’Donnell, was sentenced to five months in jail and also disqualified from owning or caring for animals for ten years. The case highlights the importance of animal welfare laws and the ongoing efforts of authorities to combat illegal puppy trading in the Sidcup area.
