Melnyk, who resides on Harvard Road in Chiswick, London, was born on December 15, 1993.
His sentencing occurred at Reading Crown Court on January 17th, where he pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by touching.
In addition to his prison term, Melnyk will be registered on the sexual offenders register for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities following his release.
The assault happened around 6 a.m.
on Short Lane in Staines, a location known for its proximity to busy commuter routes.
According to reports, the victim, an 18-year-old woman at the time, had just disembarked from a bus when she was followed by Melnyk.
He reportedly grabbed her by the arm and attempted to pull down her trousers, an act that escalated the situation.
The victim fell to the ground during the struggle, and Melnyk fell on top of her, subsequently engaging in sexual assault.
Despite the assault, the victim managed to resist and shouted for help, attracting the attention of a nearby taxi driver.
The driver responded promptly, calling the police to report the incident.
Melnyk, however, fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Law enforcement officials launched a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrator.
Officers utilized CCTV footage from the bus and surrounding areas to track down Melnyk.
They matched his appearance to the suspect description and identified him through the CCTV footage.
Further investigation involved cross-referencing the Oyster card used on the bus, which led to Melnyk’s identification as the cardholder.
Subsequent searches of Melnyk’s residence uncovered clothing consistent with what was seen in the CCTV footage, including a distinctive pair of jeans with mud stains on the knees.
These items served as crucial evidence linking him to the crime scene.
The victim was able to identify Melnyk during an ID parade, further solidifying the case against him.
Following these developments, Melnyk was formally charged with the offences and remanded in custody pending sentencing.
Investigating officer DC Katherine Peters commented on the case, stating, “This was a complex investigation that involved many different lines of enquiries including forensics, intelligence, witness testimonies, and CCTV footage.
We are committed to ensuring justice is served for victims of such heinous crimes.”
