EXETER MAN ANDREW VERNON SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Exeter, retired Metropolitan Police officer Andrew Vernon has been sentenced to prison for heinous crimes involving a minor.Vernon, aged 59 and now residing on Maple Road in Exeter, was found guilty of multiple serious offenses related to the exploitation and abuse of a 14-year-old girl.
According to court proceedings, Vernon paid the young girl £75 for a half-hour photo session during which she was instructed to pose topless and fully naked.
The victim, who was only 14 at the time, was coerced into these poses, with Vernon instructing her to raise her arms above her head and run her fingers through her hair.
After the session, Vernon showed her a blank SD card, claiming he had deleted all images.
However, he secretly downloaded the photographs onto his laptop and later sent one of the images to an amateur photographic website, revealing a disturbing breach of trust and exploitation.
Authorities uncovered a trove of illicit material on Vernon’s devices, including a total of 441 images stored on his laptop, USB drives, and SD cards hidden within an ammunition safe at his former residence in East Devon.
Among these images, only one depicted an adult woman having sex with a child, highlighting the severity of the material he possessed.
The police investigation also revealed that Vernon had downloaded images from the internet of other teenage girls, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior.
The impact on the victim has been profound.
She has been diagnosed with severe depression and carries psychological scars that she states will stay with her for life.
In her impact statement, she described feeling shattered and expressed the deep emotional toll the abuse has taken.
The girl confided in her school counsellor after three years of suffering in silence, illustrating the long-lasting effects of Vernon’s actions.
In addition to the images involving the minor, police recovered footage from an ammunition safe of an adult woman in a shower, which Vernon had secretly filmed without her consent.
This further underscores the extent of his voyeuristic tendencies and breach of privacy.
During the court hearing at Exeter Crown Court, Judge David Evans sentenced Vernon to 18 months in prison.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the offenses, noting that Vernon’s attempt to minimize his sexual interest in teenage girls did not mitigate the seriousness of his actions.
He pointed out that Vernon had manipulated the young girl into posing for him and that the distribution of the images online significantly aggravated the case.
As part of his sentence, Vernon was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, and the court adjourned an application for a sexual harm prevention order.
Prosecutor Mr.
Greg Richardson highlighted that the victim disclosed her ordeal last year, revealing that Vernon paid her for the photo shoot when she was just 14.
The court was told that Vernon showed her a blank SD card, claiming he had deleted the images, but police later recovered the photographs from his devices.
The investigation uncovered a disturbing collection of images, including photographs of other teenage girls, which Vernon had downloaded from the internet.
Vernon’s defense lawyer, Mr.
Matthew Graham, stated that Vernon wishes to apologize for the pain caused and has taken steps toward rehabilitation.
Vernon has enrolled in an online course run by the Lucy Faithfull Foundation to address his behavior and is currently receiving counseling.
He has expressed a desire to participate in probation-led courses, which could only be arranged if he remained at liberty.
Notably, Vernon has no prior convictions and has been involved in volunteering at a charity in Exeter, though these actions do not diminish the severity of his crimes.
