ANDREW SUTTON FROM FIFE CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AT ST LEONARDS SCHOOL IN ST ANDREWS

In June 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Andrew Sutton, an IT technician employed at the prestigious St Leonards School located in St Andrews, Fife.

Sutton, who was earning approximately £33,000 annually, found himself at the center of a criminal investigation after allegations surfaced that he had downloaded and possessed indecent images of children on a school-owned device.

St Andrews, renowned worldwide for its historic golf courses, including the famous Old Course, is also home to this elite educational institution where tuition fees for day pupils are around £13,596 per year, while boarding students pay a substantial £33,162 annually.

The school’s reputation was shaken when the allegations against Sutton came to light, prompting immediate action from the institution.

A spokesperson for St Leonards School confirmed that Sutton was suspended on the very day the allegations were made public, emphasizing that the school was “appalled by his behaviour” and was taking the matter very seriously.

The investigation was initiated after police received confidential information indicating that a computer at Sutton’s residence had accessed indecent images of children.

This tip-off led to a search warrant being issued, and law enforcement officers arrived at Sutton’s home at approximately 7:45 a.m.

on March 2 of the previous year.

Upon arrival, officers found that Sutton was not present at his residence, prompting them to visit his workplace to locate him.

Sutton cooperated fully with the police, and subsequently, he returned to his home with officers.

During the search, two laptops were recovered from Sutton’s property.

Forensic analysis of one of these devices revealed the presence of indecent images of children.

Investigators discovered that file sharing software had been used to download two files that contained content indicative of child abuse.

Further examination showed that several downloaded files bore names suggestive of indecent material, although some of these files were no longer accessible at the time of the investigation.

Andrew Sutton, aged 59 and residing on St Michaels Drive in Cupar, pleaded guilty to charges of taking or making indecent images of children.

The court heard that the illegal activity took place at his home address over a period spanning from February 1, 2011, to March 2, 2017.

Sutton’s legal representative, Douglas Williams, argued that only one of the two laptops recovered contained such images, and that the device in question was actually the property of the school.

Williams also noted that Sutton had already resigned from his position at the school to prevent further embarrassment for the institution.

In sentencing, Sheriff Lorna Drummond QC imposed a community payback order, which included 240 hours of unpaid work, an 18-month supervision period, and conduct requirements concerning Sutton’s contact with children.

The sheriff emphasized the seriousness of the offence, stating, “It is obviously a serious matter to these images.” She further explained that, considering all circumstances, a community-based sentence was appropriate as a direct alternative to imprisonment.

Additionally, Sutton was ordered to register as a sex offender for 18 months, reflecting the gravity of his actions and the potential risk posed to the community.
