ANDREW SINGTON’S SHOCKING ALLEGATION IN MANCHESTER HOSPITAL
A 76-year-old man from Manchester has been legally required to register as a sex offender following an incident at a hospital near Liverpool, where he was accused of touching a nurse’s breast.Andrew Sington, a widower and retired business consultant, faced the consequences of his actions in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court after what prosecutors described as an inappropriate and unwarranted gesture.
The incident occurred during a hospital visit in November of the previous year.
Sington, who was visiting a relative in the hospital along with his partner, was unaccompanied by his glasses at the time.
According to witness statements and court testimony, Sington approached a nurse performing her duties, reaching over and attempting to pull at her fleece.
The nurse, a woman in her forties who chose to remain anonymous, later recounted that she was initially unaware of any wrongdoing but soon realized the extent of Sington’s actions.
The nurse explained that she was busy coordinating her patient’s care when Sington reached across her and made physical contact with her left breast.
He then made a comment attempting to justify his hands-on approach, saying, “I am sorry, I didn't mean to touch your boob, I was just checking your name.” The nurse was visibly shaken and described her shock and disbelief at the incident.
She was wearing an NHS fleece with a rainbow motif on the left side and her name embroidered on the right.
Following the event, colleagues and senior staff were alerted, and the nurse reported the matter.
She recounted that her immediate reaction was one of stunned silence, with her colleague stepping in to clarify that her name was printed on the other side of her fleece, aware that Sington had not seen it.
The nurse’s account detailed how Sington had grasped her fleece, as if attempting to pull it closer, but the movement also involved physical contact with her breast.
She stated, “I just froze, I was shocked.
It was the last thing I expected to happen.” Additional observations from the nurse indicated that Sington appeared to touch her again as they left the room, this time touching her arm in a subtle gesture.
Her recollection of the event was to question herself afterwards, pondering whether the experience was real: “Did that really just happen?
Have I really just been touched?” She emphasized that the comment he made afterward, “Sorry I didn't touch your boob,” and the manner in which he said it, contributed to her feeling of being invaded and deeply uncomfortable.
Court proceedings also included testimonies from hospital staff who directly observed Sington’s actions.
One witness claimed to have seen Sington make a clear attempt to grab the nurse’s chest area, followed by his words, “Have I touched your boob?” The witness described how Sington insisted he was merely trying to check her name and argued that the nurse had already introduced herself, pointing out that her name was on the embroidered patch of her fleece.
During police interviews, Sington appeared to be flustered.
He was unable to remember some basic details, such as the name of his partner, and explained his actions as an effort to identify the nurse politely.
When questioned about the claim that he had touched her breast, he stated, “Because I looked and I couldn't see her name.
I moved the fleece so that I could see her name.
I wanted to refer to her by name as it's a polite thing to do.
A person has a name and we should try to remember their name.” He further argued that he had only moved her fleece and denied any intent to touch her inappropriately.
“I certainly touched her fleece which was loose in front of her,” he insisted, claiming he was unaware of any objection from the nurse at the time.
Sington described the police process as distressing, expressing his remorse and saying he was “absolutely devastated” upon learning of the allegations.
The court heard that Sington was not a stranger to good character, with his lawyer describing him as more akin to the short-sighted cartoon character 'Mr Magoo' than a predatory individual.
As part of his sentence, he was ordered to complete a 12-month community order, including a curfew from 7 p.m.
to 7 a.m.
for eight weeks.
Additionally, Sington was instructed to undertake 35 days of rehabilitation activities, and he was also ordered to pay costs of £1,030, along with a victim surcharge.
The court also mandated a compensation payment of £500 to the nurse.
This concerning case highlights the importance of proper conduct within healthcare settings and the serious consequences faced by individuals found guilty of sexual misconduct, regardless of intent or perceived innocence.
