ANDREW SAWYER FROM WAKEFIELD SENTENCED AFTER MULTIPLE CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES IN LEEDS

In a significant case that highlights ongoing concerns about child exploitation and online abuse, Andrew Sawyer, a resident of Wakefield, has been sentenced to prison after a series of disturbing offenses involving child abuse images and videos.

The case, which unfolded over several years, culminated in Sawyer’s conviction at Leeds Crown Court, where he was found guilty of possessing and sharing highly illegal material on four separate occasions.

Andrew Sawyer, aged 44, first came under police scrutiny in 2013 when authorities discovered that he possessed indecent images of children.

Although he was sentenced at that time, the punishment was non-custodial, and he was required to complete a sex offending rehabilitation program.

Despite this, Sawyer continued to seek out and download illicit content, demonstrating a troubling pattern of behavior that persisted over the years.

The court heard that Sawyer’s criminal activities spanned from July 2016 to February 2021, during which he admitted to 23 separate offenses related to child abuse images.

The severity of his offenses was underscored by the types of material he possessed, which included Category A images—classified as the most serious—alongside Category B and C images, which involve prohibited depictions of children and extreme acts involving animals.

Prosecutor David McGonigal detailed the police investigations, revealing that officers first arrested Sawyer in September 2017.

During this initial arrest, they discovered hundreds of images on his phone, downloaded over a period of ten months.

These images included the most serious category of child abuse material, as well as videos and images depicting bestiality.

During police interviews, Sawyer made disturbing comments, suggesting a lack of remorse by stating he “must have felt horny that day” and that there was “no harm in looking.” His criminal behavior did not cease there.

Sawyer was re-arrested in April 2018 while on bail, at which point his phone was seized again.

Further examination revealed additional hundreds of images and videos, including more material involving animals.

Police also uncovered evidence that Sawyer had been communicating with other individuals online, sharing and exchanging similar illicit content.

In April 2020, Sawyer was arrested once more at his residence in Outwood, where authorities recovered more images and videos.

The investigation continued, and in February 2021, police visited his home again, discovering two more phones containing hundreds of additional images and videos.

These repeated offenses demonstrated a persistent pattern of illegal activity over several years.

At Leeds Crown Court, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar sentenced Sawyer to 40 months in prison, emphasizing the importance of public safety and the need for a strong punitive response.

The judge stated, “I would be failing in my public duty if I did not impose a custodial sentence.” Furthermore, Sawyer was placed under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his internet access, prohibits him from deleting his search history, and grants police ongoing access to his electronic devices at any time.

The court also noted that Sawyer had been held on remand since February of the previous year, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and the ongoing legal process.
