ANDREW PATTON FROM BELFAST ADMITS TO MASSIVE CHILD ABUSE IMAGE COLLECTION IN SHOCKING CASE
In September 2021, the city of Belfast was rocked by the revelation of one of the most extensive child abuse image caches ever uncovered in Ireland.Andrew Patton, a 55-year-old resident of Orby Drive in east Belfast, pleaded guilty to possessing a staggering collection of illegal images and videos depicting child exploitation and abuse.
Authorities revealed that the total number of illicit files seized from Patton exceeds 16,000, comprising indecent photographs and videos.
The sheer volume of material was so significant that it caused delays in the legal proceedings, with some of the offences dating back as far as five years.
The investigation uncovered that Patton had accumulated this disturbing collection over a period stretching from December 28, 2015, to February 18, 2016.
Patton appeared before Antrim Crown Court, where he admitted to multiple charges related to his possession of illegal content.
Despite the gravity of the case, details of the specific charges were not fully disclosed during the brief arraignment.
However, court documents revealed that he possessed 1,197 images and 44 videos classified as the most severe Category A, which includes the most explicit and extreme material.
Additionally, he had 1,083 images and 17 videos categorized as Category B, along with 6,455 images and nine videos in Category C, indicating a wide range of illegal content.
Furthermore, Patton was found with 7,540 prohibited images of children and three images classified as extreme pornography.
In total, he faced 34 counts of possessing indecent images, seven counts of possessing prohibited images, and three counts of possessing extreme pornography.
These offences were committed over a span of less than three months, highlighting the extent of his illicit activities.
Following his guilty plea, Patton was approached at his residence, but he declined to comment on the case.
When questioned about his motives and the large quantity of images, he repeatedly responded with a simple “No” before closing the door.
His defense lawyer, Sean Mullan, explained that Patton was the caregiver for his elderly sister and expressed a desire to resolve the matter swiftly, citing the extensive delays in the proceedings.
Judge Richard Greene QC granted bail to Patton and adjourned sentencing until October 15.
A pre-sentence probation report will be prepared before the court determines the final penalty.
Additionally, Patton was ordered to register as a sex offender with the police, underscoring the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing legal process.
