Rochester Rapist
In August 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Andrew Patterson, a man from Rochester who was convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl. Patterson, who is wheelchair-bound due to a degenerative spinal condition, was found guilty of multiple serious offenses that shocked the local community and prompted a stern judicial response.

During the proceedings at Maidstone Crown Court in Kent, Judge Adele Williams addressed Patterson directly, emphasizing the grave nature of his crimes and the threat he posed to children. The judge stated, "I have no doubt you pose a significant risk of causing serious harm to children by the commission of further offences and it is therefore necessary to impose an extended sentence of imprisonment."

Andrew Patterson, aged 37, had previously admitted to three counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault. His criminal record also includes admitting to making and distributing indecent images of children, with these offenses occurring between March 5 and March 27. The police classified the images as depicting abuse of varying degrees of severity, highlighting the disturbing nature of his crimes.

In light of the severity of his actions, the court sentenced Patterson to a total of 18 years in prison. This sentence comprises 13 years of incarceration, with an additional five years on extended licence, meaning he must serve at least two-thirds of his prison term before being eligible for parole. Once released, he will face a further five-year extension to his licence period, ensuring ongoing supervision.

Furthermore, Patterson was subjected to a range of stringent measures designed to prevent further harm. He was placed under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and mandated to register as a sex offender indefinitely. The court also prohibited him from working with children or vulnerable adults, reflecting the serious concern for public safety.

These legal actions underscore the judicial system’s recognition of the danger Patterson poses and the importance of safeguarding the community from potential future offenses. The case remains a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable individuals from sexual predators.
