ANDREW MCNALLY AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN GLASGOW

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Andrew McNally, a 34-year-old insurance broker from Glasgow, now faces potential incarceration following an incident involving a sexual assault at a private gathering.

The event took place during a celebration marking the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, where partying revellers had congregated.

The victim, a 33-year-old woman and off-duty police officer, was among the attendees.

At some point during the gathering, she fell asleep on a sofa alongside a female friend.

Her slumber was abruptly interrupted when McNally reportedly began to molest her, repeatedly groping her from behind.

The assault was intense enough that the woman was awakened from her sleep, frightened and overwhelmed.

Feeling terrified and in distress, the woman managed to alert her friend, whom she mouthed the words 'help me' as the assault continued.

Her friend, noticing her distress, questioned what was happening, asking, 'what is going on?' In response, McNally instructed her to be quiet, trying to prevent the women from recognizing what was happening.

During this ordeal, the victim was observed to be sobbing uncontrollably.

The accused allegedly threatened the woman, warning her that she would 'ruin his life' if she disclosed the incident to his wife, before apologizing repeatedly with, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry.' The women, distressed and frightened, decided to leave the premises.

Shortly thereafter, the victim reported the assault to the police.

A forensic investigation was carried out, which confirmed the presence of McNally's DNA on her body as well as on her bra and underwear.

Despite this evidence, McNally denied the sexual assault, and the case proceeded to trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

The proceedings lasted two days, and the jury took only an hour to reach a verdict of guilty.

During the trial, which included evidence presented via screens to protect the victim’s privacy, she described her experience.

She tearfully recounted feeling 'frozen' with fear during the assault.

She explained: "He was directly behind me when I woke up.

I opened my eyes briefly, then closed them again because I wanted to pretend I was still asleep.

I didn't know what he would do if I said or did anything, so I just froze.

I was scared about what might happen next." The woman further detailed her sense of helplessness: "I didn't know why I didn't shout or scream, but I was just frozen because I didn't know how he would react.

When my friend asked 'what is going on?' he immediately jumped up and started moving aggressively around the room, telling her to 'shut the f**k up' and 'ssh.' I was hysterical." She emphasized that, at the time of the assault, she was simply a woman, not a police officer, and her natural reaction was to remain frozen.

The witness, a 30-year-old, also described her friend’s state during the attack, noting she had 'red eyes' and appeared 'petrified.' Andrew McNally, who appeared visibly upset and wept in the dock upon his conviction, told the court that he had fallen asleep on the couch and was awakened by shouting.

He claimed, "I fell asleep on the couch, and the next thing I realised, I could hear shouting and it sounded angry, which startled me.

I sprung up and asked what was happening.

I did not touch her at all." When questioned about the allegations, McNally insisted that the women were intentionally lying.

He stated, "It is my position that they are making it up." The sheriff, Liam Murphy, deferred sentencing until next month to allow for reports to be compiled, and McNally was granted continued bail.

As part of the legal process, he was also placed on the sex offenders' register.

This case remains a stark reminder of the gravity of sexual assault and the importance of addressing such violations even among social gatherings.

The community awaits the sentencing while justice has been served through conviction.
