ANDREW MATTHEWS SENTENCED IN WARRINGTON AFTER SEXUAL AND ASSAULT OFFENSES
A woman suffered bruising and emotional distress following an attack by sex offender Andrew Matthews in Warrington.Matthews, who told his victim he was a "black belt" in attacking women, made a disturbing remark before forcibly grabbing her genitals with such force that she was left crying and with visible bruises.
The victim, whose identity cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, reported suffering from anxiety and panic attacks as a result of the assault.
Prosecutor Kate Morley told Liverpool Crown Court that Matthews had "forcibly grabbed her over her clothing," prompting her to scream and begin crying.
Judge Louise Brandon described Matthews’ actions, stating he had "grabbed and squeezed her vagina, causing pain and bruising." The attack, earlier this year, left the woman feeling depressed and uncomfortable in her own skin.
The court was also told Matthews had "grabbed her by the neck with one hand" and spat in her face before punching her.
Morley noted that there was "no physical injury" from the punch.
Matthews, of O'Leary Street, Warrington, has a criminal record consisting of 19 previous convictions for 24 offences, including battery against a woman and other non-domestic violence batteries.
Defending, William Staunton acknowledged that the offences "should cause him to feel shame" and urged Matthews to "reflect upon the way in which he behaves." He highlighted that Matthews had no prior history of sexual offenses and had completed a 12-step program to address alcoholism while in custody.
Mr.
Staunton added, "He will have time from today to sit at Her Majesty's Pleasure to sit and contemplate what he has done." Following a trial, Matthews was convicted of sexual assault and common assault.
In sentencing, Judge Brandon pointed out that a "particularly disgusting aspect of this offence" was Matthews spitting at the woman.
As a result, Matthews was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
