Cheam Sexual Abuser
In April 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving a middle-aged man from Cheam who traveled all the way to Bristol with the intent of meeting a young girl for sexual purposes. The incident came to light when police apprehended Andrew Maley at Temple Meads railway station, revealing a troubling attempt at child sexual exploitation.

According to court proceedings, an undercover officer had been posing as a 13-year-old girl named Molly on the Kik Messenger platform. The officer engaged in conversations with Maley, who, during their exchanges, sexualized the dialogue and expressed a desire to meet the girl in person. The court heard that Maley, aged 47 and residing on Nonsuch Walk in Cheam, had been lured into the trap set by law enforcement.

Maley’s interactions with the decoy quickly escalated into sexually explicit conversations. He asked the undercover officer to perform sexual acts and discussed potential activities they could engage in together. The court was informed that Maley suggested she travel to London, but the decoy responded by inviting him to Bristol. Maley then made arrangements to meet her in Bristol, arriving at Temple Meads station in the morning, only to be swiftly arrested by police officers upon his arrival.

During the arrest, officers found items such as lubricant on Maley, indicating his intentions. He was subsequently taken into custody and questioned. Maley chose not to comment during the police interview. The court heard that he had also requested to engage in sexualized online chats with multiple individuals claiming to be boys, which was taken into account during sentencing.

Kenneth Bell, prosecuting, detailed the case, stating that the undercover officer had identified herself as a 13-year-old girl from Bristol, while Maley claimed to be a 46-year-old man from London. The interactions between them became increasingly sexual at Maley’s behest, with him asking the decoy to perform sexual acts and discussing their potential meeting.

Maley pleaded guilty to several charges, including attempting to incite a girl under 16 to engage in penetrative sexual activity, attempting to communicate sexually with a minor, and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming. He also admitted to seeking sexualized online conversations with others he believed to be boys.

In sentencing, Judge Timothy Rose handed Maley an 18-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years. The judge emphasized the severity of Maley’s actions, stating, “The most serious part is you most definitely crossed the line. You physically got on a train in the full expectation of meeting a child for your sexual gratification.”

Furthermore, Maley was ordered to undergo rehabilitation programs and complete 140 hours of unpaid community service. He was also mandated to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and was issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his internet usage to prevent further offenses. Additionally, he was required to pay a victim surcharge of £140. As he left court, Maley declined to make any comments regarding the case.
