ANDREW IBBOTSON'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN LONDON: CHILD ABUSE AND INDECENT IMAGES REVEALED
In June 2012, a disturbing case emerged involving Andrew Ibbotson, a trainee primary school teacher based in London, who was found guilty of heinous child abuse offences and possession of indecent images of children. The case was brought to light after Ibbotson, 34 years old and residing on Frobisher Road in Greenwich, was arrested following a covert operation by the Metropolitan Police Service’s Paedophile Unit.
Police investigations revealed that Ibbotson had attempted to arrange a sexual encounter with an undercover officer, discussing the possibility of paying £80 to engage in sexual acts with two fictitious children, aged eight and ten.
The police’s undercover operation was initiated after Ibbotson expressed his intentions to meet with these children, which he believed were real victims.
During the exchange, prosecutor Peter Zinner detailed that Ibbotson, upon agreeing to the terms, was observed rubbing his hands together and responding with a simple “lovely.” Further scrutiny uncovered that Ibbotson was not only involved in these disturbing online conversations but also harbored racist and extremist views.
He maintained a presence on Twitter under the alias ‘hitherqueen,’ where he made inflammatory posts comparing Lewisham and Catford to Jerusalem and wrote about figures such as Osama bin Laden and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
His online activity painted a troubling picture of his mindset and intentions.
Following his arrest in March, authorities conducted a thorough search of Ibbotson’s residence.
The search yielded a significant collection of child pornography stored on his home computer, with images classified from Level 1 to Level 5, the latter indicating the most severe and explicit material.
The discovery of these images confirmed his involvement in the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.
Throughout his training at the University of Greenwich, Ibbotson had worked in six different schools across London, raising serious concerns about the safety of the children he interacted with.
Prosecutor Zinner emphasized that Ibbotson’s pursuit of a career in teaching appeared to be partly motivated by his desire to be close to young children.
The fact that he had been working as a teaching assistant for ten years, actively seeking contact with children both professionally and through his online activities, was described as deeply troubling.
Judge Michael Grieve addressed the court, highlighting the significant danger Ibbotson posed to children.
He stated, “The picture of you is a disturbing one.
Online chats show you find gratification in the infliction of pain on young children, with racism and white supremacism part of your fantasies.
You have been working as a teaching assistant for 10 years, and it is indicative that you have been in active pursuit of contact with children.
It is both in pleasure and in your profession that you actively seek out contact with children.” On May 23, Ibbotson pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to arrange a child sex offence, attempting to pay for sexual services of a child, and four counts of making indecent images of children.
He also admitted to three counts of distributing indecent images and possessing 95 indecent images in total.
The court scheduled his sentencing for June 21, where he faced an indeterminate prison sentence due to the severity of his crimes.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh, speaking on behalf of the Paedophile Unit, expressed grave concern about the potential for further offenses.
He stated, “I am in no doubt that Ibbotson would have committed serious sexual assaults had the children existed.
I believe that he has committed other offences and I would therefore urge anyone who believes they may have been a victim to have the confidence to report the incident to police.
We are here to support and protect you.” McHugh also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the police to combat such crimes, noting that on the same day as Ibbotson’s sentencing, other individuals were charged or arrested for related offences, including arranging child sex offences and distributing indecent images.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing and bringing to justice the most dangerous offenders while safeguarding vulnerable victims across London.
