ANDREW HARDY AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN DURHAM
Andrew Hardy, a 54-year-old resident of Finchale Avenue in Brasside, Durham, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences involving two young girls. His criminal actions included grooming the victims, sexually assaulting them, and inducing psychological trauma, one of which involved instructing a child to view indecent images.
The court proceedings took place at Durham Crown Court on a Friday, where Hardy appeared to receive his sentence following a conviction that was established after a trial.
Prosecutor Rachel Masters provided details of Hardy’s grooming behavior, emphasizing that his actions involved deliberate planning and breach of trust.
She explained that Hardy purposefully isolated the victims to facilitate his offending.
In one particularly disturbing act, he forced a young girl to look at indecent images of children.
Adding to the gravity of his crimes, it was revealed that Hardy previously had a conviction for possessing approximately 133,000 indecent images.
He had served a prior prison sentence for that offense, highlighting a pattern of disturbing behavior.
During the sentencing hearing, Hardy’s defense solicitor, Paul Cross, noted that Hardy suffers from incurable ulcerative colitis, which would cause him ongoing physical discomfort and pain during his time in prison.
Cross also pointed out that Hardy’s incarceration would impact his family, suggesting a personal hardship stemming from the sentence.
Judge Jo Kidd, presiding over the case, sentenced Hardy to five years in prison.
Additionally, she imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order along with an indefinite restraining order, reflecting the severity and ongoing risk associated with Hardy’s actions.
Hardy was also placed on the sex offender register indefinitely.
The judge publicly condemned Hardy’s conduct, stating, “You used the opportunity to gratify your own personal, sexual interest in children.
You groomed a girl against the backdrop of terrifying her by talking about inappropriate subject matter.
To make her dependent on you and scare her in a way to prevent her from disclosing what was happening, you caused her ongoing terror, saying that the world was filled with ginger-haired paedophiles.
You were the paedophile.” Concerning the second victim, Judge Kidd noted, “You persistently groomed her, which involved showing her indecent images of children.
You encouraged her to go on websites herself to look at images of that nature.
It was a highly cynical decision on your part.
She can now never forget seeing those images as a child.” Andrew Hardy was thus sentenced to serve a substantial prison term, with measures in place to monitor and prevent any potential reoffending, reflecting the seriousness with which the court viewed his criminal conduct in Durham.
