ANDREW HADWIN SCOUTMASTER AND PRISON OFFICER FROM OXFORD JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

In a shocking case that has sent ripples through the community of Oxford, Andrew Hadwin, a 27-year-old former Scoutmaster and prison officer, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and distributing a vast collection of indecent images of children.

The sentencing took place at Oxford Crown Court, where the judge expressed his disbelief at how easily such disturbing material can be accessed via the internet.

Judge Peter Clarke, who presided over the case, sentenced Hadwin to 18 months behind bars.

During the hearing, the judge emphasized the alarming ease with which individuals can find illegal and exploitative content online.

He called for greater restrictions on internet search engines to prevent access to such material, citing a recent report by the Internet Watch Foundation that revealed a quadrupling in the number of websites hosting child abuse images over the past three years.

Judge Clarke remarked, “It does beggar belief that it is so easy to just type out words like that into a computer or search engine run by such an international company and come up with pornography so easily.” His comments underscored the urgent need for measures to curb the proliferation of child exploitation content on the internet.

Prosecutor Peter Coombe detailed the extent of Hadwin’s online activities, revealing that the defendant had initiated his disturbing searches by inputting specific keywords into his personal computer’s search engine.

Further, Hadwin was involved in an online group where requests for and exchanges of indecent images of children were made.

Evidence included an email request from Hadwin to another online user, seeking a particular image, though this message was not publicly read in court due to its graphic nature.

In a revealing demonstration, the Oxford Mail conducted a quick online search using some of Hadwin’s keywords.

Within seconds, links to websites containing child and teenage pornography appeared, illustrating how accessible such content is in the digital age.

Judge Clarke reiterated his concern about the ease of access, stating, “I feel it necessary to echo the court’s concern to the ease with which search engines of any kind can be used to access indecent images.

I am extremely conscious these remarks might even increase the perverted use of search engines.

But it seems to me every proper effort should be made to try and restrict the availability of pornographic material involving children.” The court heard that Hadwin, who worked as a prison officer at Bullingdon Prison near Bicester and was also a Scoutmaster, had pleaded guilty to seven counts of distributing indecent photographs of children, along with possession of 2,724 images and 105 videos.

Among these, nine images and one video were classified as level five, indicating content that depicted simulated torture of children.

The police investigation was triggered when Hadwin’s lodger tipped off authorities about the disturbing content on his computer.

Prosecutor Coombe confirmed that law enforcement officials uncovered the material during their inquiry.

Jennifer Edwards, representing Hadwin, stated that her client had recently married, and his wife was standing by him despite the charges.

She emphasized the frighteningly easy access to such material, saying, “The reality is access (to indecent images) is frighteningly easy.” Following his conviction, Hadwin was dismissed from his position as a prison officer and was also expelled from the Scout movement.

The judge imposed additional restrictions upon his release, including a ban from working with children and from possessing a password to any private home computer, aiming to prevent further access to or distribution of such material.
