ANDREW GARRETT FROM FELIXSTOWE SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES IN IPSWICH

In a case that has shocked the local community of Felixstowe, a 58-year-old lorry driver named Andrew Garrett was found to have downloaded and stored a disturbing collection of indecent images of children. The incident came to light in March 2019 when police, acting on intelligence, visited a haulage company in Felixstowe where Garrett was employed. During their investigation, officers seized his mobile phone, which was discovered on the dashboard of the lorry he had been driving at the time.

Upon analysis, the phone revealed a disturbing cache of images. It contained a total of 73 indecent images classified under the most severe category, Level A, indicating the most serious form of child exploitation. Additionally, there were 102 images categorized as Level B, and a further 281 images in the lowest category, Level C. The sheer volume and severity of these images underscored the gravity of the offense.

Garrett, who resides on Park Lane in Kirton, was promptly charged and appeared in Ipswich Crown Court to face the charges. He admitted to three counts of making indecent images of children, a serious criminal offense that has significant legal repercussions. During the court proceedings, Garrett was unrepresented by legal counsel and expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing for viewing the images.

In sentencing, the court imposed a two-year community order, which requires Garrett to undertake various rehabilitative activities. Additionally, he was ordered to participate in a 30-day rehabilitation activity order aimed at addressing underlying issues related to his offending behavior. As part of the court’s measures to prevent future harm, Garrett was also ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, a requirement that will remain in effect for five years. Furthermore, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which is designed to restrict his access to certain online content and prevent further offenses. This order will also be in place for five years, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of children.

Despite the seriousness of the case, Garrett has no previous relevant convictions, and the court acknowledged his lack of legal representation during the proceedings. The case has raised ongoing concerns about online safety and the importance of monitoring digital activity, especially among individuals in positions of responsibility such as drivers and workers in the logistics industry.
