Logiealmond Rapist
In a disturbing case heard at Perth Sheriff Court, Andrew Forbes, a 36-year-old resident of Logiealmond, was found to possess an extensive collection of child abuse videos, amounting to over 30 hours of graphic and horrific footage. The investigation revealed that Forbes had downloaded a significant number of videos depicting the most severe forms of sexual abuse inflicted upon children, including infants and young minors.
On Wednesday, Sheriff Fiona Tait sentenced Forbes to nearly two years in prison, with an additional two-year extended sentence imposed. Furthermore, she ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes. The court was told that the sheer volume and depraved nature of the material left little choice but to incarcerate him.
The police investigation was initiated after confidential intelligence was received indicating that child pornography was being downloaded onto Forbes' computer. A search warrant was executed at his residence, leading to the seizure of his computer equipment and a hard drive. An examination of Forbes' Dell laptop revealed a single active user profile under the name 'Andy,' within which three folders contained illicit material.
Authorities discovered that out of 589 video files downloaded, 212 contained explicit child abuse content. The majority of these videos were classified as the most severe category, involving sado-masochistic abuse. The files were categorized into different levels of severity, with 92 files at level five, 79 at level four, 19 at level three, eight at level two, and four at the lowest level, level one. The total duration of all these videos combined was approximately one day, six hours, and 56 minutes.
Police officers who viewed the footage described the children involved as being in extreme distress, with many of the videos showing them being bound, slapped, and subjected to other forms of physical and sexual abuse. The videos predominantly featured boys, ranging from infants to around 16 years old.
During police interviews, Forbes admitted to downloading the material. He was charged with two counts related to possession of child pornography, covering the period from March 23 to October 3, 2012. His solicitor, Mike Tavendale, argued that Forbes had a troubled past, having been abused himself as a child. Tavendale also noted that Forbes led a modest lifestyle in a rural setting at Cottarton Cottage, sharing his home with his brother. He suggested that Forbes' drug use, particularly cannabis, might have contributed to his actions and emphasized his social isolation.
As the case concluded, the court deferred sentencing to allow for background reports to be prepared. The judge underscored the seriousness of the crimes, highlighting the depraved nature of the material and the impact on the victims, and made it clear that the sentence reflected the need for justice and public protection.
