ANDREW EDEN AND THE SHOCKING ESCAPE IN ROCHDALE, MEXICO
A notorious child sex offender, Andrew Jeremy Eden, has been brought back to the United Kingdom from Mexico and subsequently sentenced to an additional 16 months in prison.Eden, born on August 15, 1958, was subject to legal restrictions due to his past crimes and the obligations imposed by the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
Eden was originally convicted in June 2001 of indecently assaulting a seven-year-old child.
His sentence for this serious offense was four years in prison, coupled with a three-year extension on licence conditions, and he was mandated to sign the Sex Offender's Register as part of his supervision obligations.
Despite these legal constraints, Eden's actions after his initial release caused further concern.
In February 2005, Eden was recalled to prison after violating the terms of his registration, which were intended to ensure ongoing monitoring and supervision of sex offenders.
Authorities from Greater Manchester Police made efforts to arrest him at his residence in Rochdale; however, Eden was not at his address and could not be located at that time.
His disappearance became a matter of concern when a member of the public provided a tip-off that led authorities to suspect he was in Mexico.
Investigators from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre confirmed the tip by posting Eden's details on their publicly accessible “Most Wanted” website, aiming to engage the community in the search.
Following the public tip, authorities coordinated with Mexican officials and confirmed on September 13, 2008, that Eden had been apprehended in Mexico.
Extradition proceedings commenced shortly afterward, and despite Eden's attempt to contest the move through an appeal, his legal challenge was unsuccessful.
The extradition was finalized in December 2008.
Subsequently, officers from Greater Manchester Police’s extradition unit traveled to Mexico on June 29, 2009, to bring Eden back to the UK.
His return was completed smoothly, and he arrived in Manchester on July 1, where he was immediately taken into police custody for processing.
Detective Inspector Debbie Conlon Houldershaw, who works with GMP’s Sex Offender Management Unit, emphasized the gravity of Eden’s case.
She stated, “Eden has been proven to be a danger to children.
He thought by travelling abroad he would be able to escape the restrictions imposed on him in the UK.
This shows that Greater Manchester Police will do everything possible to bring these offenders back to the UK.
This process is not easy, and the officers involved have put a lot of work into getting him back so he can be properly monitored and avoid putting any further children at risk.” Jim Gamble, Chief Executive of the CEOP Centre, also commented on the case, highlighting the importance of public involvement.
He noted, “Once again, we have seen the benefit of engaging the public through CEOP’s Most Wanted website.
Our Offender Management team has worked alongside officers from Greater Manchester Police to locate and trace a high-risk child sex offender who believed he could evade management by traveling to Mexico.
This should send a clear message to other missing child sex offenders: no matter how far they travel, we will track them down and bring them to justice.”
