ANDREW DOBSON SCANDAL SHOCKS KEELE: UNIVERSITY LECTURER ADMITS TO ONLINE SEX CHAT WITH TEEN GIRLS
In February 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Andrew Dobson, a university lecturer based in Keele, who was found to have engaged in highly inappropriate online activities involving underage girls.Despite admitting to serious misconduct, Dobson was ultimately released from jail under a suspended sentence, raising questions about accountability and the severity of his punishment.
Dobson, aged 59, used his position at Keele University to facilitate illicit online sex chats with girls as young as 13.
Investigations revealed that he employed his university-issued computer to communicate with minors in conversations of a sexual nature.
He also stored numerous child sexual abuse images on his devices, some depicting the actual rape of children, which added to the gravity of his offenses.
During police interviews, Dobson confessed that he had used chat rooms to engage in sexual conversations with girls he acknowledged were under 16.
He described these interactions as part of a personal fantasy involving sexual activity with school-aged girls.
His admission came after authorities seized computers from both his university office and his home, uncovering a disturbing collection of illegal images.
The police investigation uncovered that Dobson had been in contact with seven girls aged between 13 and 15.
Following his arrest, he pleaded guilty to 17 charges related to child sex offenses.
These included 14 counts of attempting to cause a female aged 13 or over to engage in sexual activity, involving seven different girls.
Additionally, he faced two charges of making indecent photographs of children and one charge of possessing a prohibited image of a child.
Authorities found 14 Category A images—classified as the most serious—on his computer equipment, along with 12 images categorized as C.
The investigation also revealed that Dobson had been actively searching online for images of teenage girls, further illustrating his disturbing interests.
At North Staffordshire Justice Centre, District Judge Jack McGarva addressed Dobson directly, stating, “You are expected to be a role model and you have clearly fallen well below what would be expected of you.” The court heard that Dobson’s actions had betrayed the trust placed in him as an educator and public figure.
Dobson admitted to the sex charges and was sentenced to a ten-month jail term, which was suspended for two years.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
The case has also led to disciplinary proceedings from the Green Party, which Dobson helped to shape in their 2010 election manifesto, and he resigned from Keele University amid the scandal.
The incident has sparked widespread concern about safeguarding and the responsibilities of those in positions of authority.
