ANDREW BURNETT'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN COVENTRY: PENSIONER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SEVEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In August 2013, a disturbing case unfolded in Coventry involving a 75-year-old man named Andrew Burnett, who was convicted of sexually abusing a young girl.

The incident led to Burnett being sentenced to a decade behind bars, with the court also mandating that he register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

During the sentencing hearing at Coventry Crown Court, Burnett was led away from the dock after pleading guilty to nine separate charges of sexual offenses committed against the seven-year-old girl.

The courtroom was tense as the victim’s father, visibly upset and angry, confronted Burnett directly.

He shouted, “Look at me, look at me.

I’ll see you when you get out,” a stark warning and expression of his anguish.

Following this confrontation, the father turned his frustration toward the presiding judge, addressing him directly and saying, “I’m sorry.

I didn’t mean any disrespect, but he did that to my daughter.” His words underscored the deep pain and betrayal felt by the family, who had trusted Burnett before the abuse came to light.

Andrew Burnett, who resides on St Judes Road in Willenhall, Coventry, admitted to the court that he had committed the offenses.

The court heard that Burnett had taken advantage of the trust placed in him by the girl’s parents, exploiting moments when he was alone with her to carry out the abuse.

The young girl, who was not related to Burnett, recounted that these incidents occurred multiple times.

She revealed that Burnett sometimes rewarded her with small sums of money—£1 or £2—believing that at her age, such amounts were significant.

It was only after the girl found the courage to tell Burnett to stop that she was able to break free from his control.

Later, she confided in a friend, who wisely advised her to tell her mother.

The girl’s mother was then informed, and police were contacted immediately.

When Burnett was arrested, he did not deny his actions; instead, he made frank admissions to the authorities, acknowledging his guilt.

Prosecutor Paul Dhami explained the significance of the girl’s testimony, emphasizing that she was not related to Burnett and that her account was credible.

The court was told that the girl’s bravery in speaking out was crucial in bringing Burnett to justice.

During the proceedings, Burnett’s defense attorney, Ian Speed, expressed remorse on behalf of his client, stating, “He merely wishes me to apologise to his victim and her family.” Judge Richard Griffith-Jones addressed Burnett directly, acknowledging his guilty plea at the earliest opportunity and his acceptance of responsibility.

However, the judge also highlighted the severity of the crime, noting that the victim was a vulnerable, innocent child who deserved protection.

The judge remarked that Burnett’s apology might seem insincere or insufficient given the profound harm caused, stating, “To say he apologises, perhaps he doesn’t even understand the damage he has done.

Just to say ‘I apologise,’ the family might almost find it insulting because it just falls so many miles short.” Ultimately, Burnett was sentenced to ten years in prison, with the judge emphasizing that this was a particularly grave case.

He pointed out that the victim was an infant, an individual who should have been shielded from harm and nurtured in innocence.

The court’s decision also included a lifelong requirement for Burnett to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
