ANDREW BENNETT OF SUNDERLAND JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG BOY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Sunderland, Andrew Bennett, a well-known figure from the area, has been sentenced to prison following his involvement in a serious sexual assault on a teenage boy.The incident took place in May 2022 and has garnered significant media attention due to Bennett's public profile and the nature of the crime.
Andrew Bennett, aged 47, gained notoriety as a participant in the 12th series of the popular Channel 4 reality show Gogglebox, where he appeared alongside his close friend Fawn.
His involvement in the show had made him a familiar face to many viewers, but his reputation was severely tarnished by the allegations and subsequent conviction.
Bennett's residence on Gleneagles Road in Sunderland was the scene of the troubling incident that led to his arrest and conviction.
The court heard that Bennett lured the teenage victim, who was underage, to a house where the assault occurred.
The young boy was left visibly distressed, reportedly in tears and suffering from flashbacks after the attack.
The prosecution detailed how Bennett initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming he had not touched the boy.
However, evidence presented during the trial painted a different picture.
According to court testimony, Bennett took selfies with the victim before the assault, which occurred while Bennett was under the influence of alcohol.
During the confrontation, Bennett asked the boy if he was gay.
The teenager responded that he was not, but Bennett continued to pursue him regardless.
The defendant then inappropriately touched the boy, putting his hands down his pants.
Despite the boy's clear discomfort and attempts to turn away, Bennett persisted, even kissing the back of the boy's neck and leaving a lovebite.
The court was told that Bennett made a disturbing comment, saying, “if he was straight he would tell him he didn’t want him touching his penis.” The young victim tried to remind Bennett that he was just a child, to which Bennett responded dismissively, saying, “Stop, you are making me feel bad.” Unwilling to accept the boy’s refusal, Bennett continued his inappropriate advances.
At one point, he even attempted to persuade the teenager to go upstairs to a bedroom for oral sex.
The victim, overwhelmed and distressed, fled the house in tears, escaping the situation.
During police interviews, Bennett initially denied any physical contact, claiming he had only spoken to the boy during the incident.
However, when presented with physical evidence, he admitted that his behavior had been influenced by slimming tablets, which he claimed affected his actions.
Despite his attempts to deny the assault, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him.
In sentencing, Bennett was handed a prison term of 29 months.
Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register, a measure that will have lasting implications for his future.
