Rainworth Child Sexual Abuser
In December 2009, law enforcement authorities successfully conducted a sting operation targeting a man involved in online child exploitation activities. The individual, identified as Andrew Beastall, aged 31 and residing on South Avenue in Rainworth, was found to have engaged in disturbing online conversations with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl named Becky. In these exchanges, Beastall explicitly asked if he could be the first to engage in sexual acts with her, revealing his intent to exploit a minor.

Further investigations uncovered that Beastall had recorded himself performing sexual acts on his webcam, and he inquired whether Becky would invite him to visit her in person. Unbeknownst to him, Becky was actually an undercover police officer working within the paedophile unit, tasked with monitoring online grooming activities. This was not the first time Beastall had come under scrutiny for similar offenses; records indicated that he had previously been investigated in connection with grooming a 13-year-old girl, although charges at that time were dropped due to insufficient evidence.

During a court hearing at Southwark Crown Court, Beastall pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and one count of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child, covering the period from May to November 2008. The judge, Geoffrey Rivlin QC, who presided over the case, sentenced Beastall to two years in prison. The judge remarked on Beastall’s disturbing intentions, stating, “You made it very plain that you were interested in teaching this child a variety of sex acts, your belief being that she was untutored in them.”

Judge Rivlin also highlighted Beastall’s prior history, noting that in 2007, he was investigated for grooming another 13-year-old girl, similar to the case involving Becky. Fortunately, in that instance, the girl was not actually a minor, which prevented further charges. The court was informed that Beastall had initially believed Becky to be 16, as per her online profile, but later discovered her true age of 13. Despite this, Beastall continued to pursue conversations, eventually filming himself performing sexual acts and encouraging her to continue communication.

When police officers raided Beastall’s residence, they discovered contact details for other underage girls stored on his computer, although these individuals have not yet been traced. The investigation revealed that Beastall had been involved in online grooming activities before, with the previous case also involving a 13-year-old girl. However, due to lack of sufficient evidence, charges were not pursued at that time.

In mitigation, John Armstrong, representing Beastall, explained that the defendant had turned to the internet out of loneliness and low self-esteem. He stated, “He sought solace in internet chatrooms when he was feeling low, isolated and suffering from low self-esteem.” The court also imposed restrictions on Beastall’s internet usage, banning him from chatrooms, and issued a seven-year sexual offences prevention order to prevent further offending.
