ANDRE SIMPSON SENTENCED IN SWANSEA FOR CAMPAIGN OF SEXUAL ABUSE AGAINST YOUNG GIRL
A man named Andre Simpson subjected a vulnerable young girl to a prolonged campaign of rape and sexual assault over several years. The abuse began when the victim was only four or five years old and persisted into her teenage years.
Judge Paul Thomas QC described Simpson as a "very twisted individual" who showed no remorse and forced the girl to endure the ordeal of a trial.
The 54-year-old, residing in Bronwydd, Birchgrove, Swansea, was responsible for multiple instances of repeated rape and assault.
Some of these offenses took place over 20 years ago, but the abuse was not reported to authorities at the time.
Simpson denied the allegations, but he was convicted after a trial at Swansea Crown Court.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim read an impact statement through prosecution barrister Robin Rouch.
She expressed that she felt she had no proper childhood because of Simpson's actions.
She shared that the abuse has made her distrustful of people and wary of older men.
She also revealed she still suffers from flashbacks and nightmares.
The victim described the abuse as "the skeleton in the closet" she had been unable to report for many years.
She added that by coming forward and reporting to the police, she hoped to prevent other children from suffering similar abuse.
As a victim of sexual offences, her legal anonymity was maintained.
Previously, Simpson had been convicted of 18 counts including rape, indecent assault, sexual assault, indecency with a child, and possession of indecent images of a child, when he appeared for sentencing.
The court heard that Simpson had orchestrated a "campaign" of abuse against his young victim, with Judge Thomas describing him as a "very twisted individual" who exploited the girl for his own sexual gratification, disregarding the physical and emotional trauma inflicted.
The judge emphasized that Simpson would not be additionally punished for the trial itself, but criticized his defence strategy—where he instructed his barrister to repeatedly label the victim as a "cynical liar"—calling it "particularly distasteful." Furthermore, during the trial, Simpson questioned the integrity of the police officer investigating the case and attempted to shift blame onto his sons for the indecent images found on his laptop, indicating a willingness to blame others to obscure his own guilt.
Simpson was sentenced to a total of 21 years in prison, with an extended one-year license period.
He is to serve two-thirds of his sentence before being released on licence to complete the remaining time in the community.
Upon release, Simpson will remain a registered sex offender for life and was also subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
