FENHAM TAXI DRIVER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF VULNERABLE PASSENGER
A Fenham taxi driver, Amer Salamat, left a vulnerable female passenger terrified by sexually assaulting her in his car.
The woman, who had been separated from friends during a night out in Newcastle city centre, asked to be taken home to County Durham.
During the trip, she texted her brother saying she felt unsafe.
When they arrived near her home, Salamat, a 55-year-old married man with no previous convictions and more than a decade of experience as a taxi driver, gave her a piece of paper with his name and number, and then leaned over, kissed her while touching her thigh.
The victim stated in court that she felt vulnerable, frightened, and upset, and that Salamat's actions left her crying.
Despite denying sexual assault, Salamat was found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court, and sentenced to six months suspended for 18 months, with requirements for rehabilitation and to sign the sex offenders register for seven years.
The Judge highlighted the impact on the victim and the seriousness of such offending in the taxi trade.
