AMEER ARSHAD'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN GLASGOW: VICTIMS' LIVES FOREVER CHANGED
Ameer Arshad, a man with a disturbing history of sexual violence, was sentenced to a decade behind bars today after a High Court judge acknowledged the profound impact his crimes had on his victims. The court heard how Arshad, 30, carried out a series of heinous acts in Glasgow, targeting vulnerable young individuals and exploiting their trust.
One of the most disturbing incidents involved Arshad forcing a teenage boy, aged 17, to perform oral sex on him in a secluded lane in Glasgow on July 23, 2022.
This assault was characterized by its brutality and the coercive nature of the act, leaving the young victim deeply traumatized.
The court was told that Arshad's second known attack occurred nearly a year later, on July 9, 2023, when he repeatedly raped a woman at the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow.
The woman was intoxicated at the time and unable to give consent, making the assault particularly egregious.
During the sentencing, Lady Haldane emphasized that Arshad claimed to have known both victims through social media platforms.
However, she clarified that neither of the victims accepted any prior acquaintance with him before the assaults took place.
The judge described Arshad’s actions as opportunistic, taking advantage of the victims’ vulnerabilities to commit his sex crimes.
She pointed out that his behavior was calculated and predatory, aimed at exploiting those who were least able to defend themselves.
Arshad, who is currently detained at Glasgow’s Barlinnie Prison, had previously denied the charges of rape during an earlier trial.
Despite his denial, the court found him guilty of both sexual offenses.
Lady Haldane also noted that Arshad has a criminal record that includes convictions for road traffic offenses and a violent assault on a 71-year-old man.
The court’s assessment indicated that Arshad poses a high risk of reoffending in the future, especially in terms of sexual violence.
One of the victims, a woman who was assaulted by Arshad, provided a victim impact statement that was both eloquent and devastating.
Her account detailed the profound emotional and psychological toll his actions had inflicted upon her, highlighting the lasting scars left by his crimes.
In addition to his ten-year prison sentence, the judge ordered that Arshad be subject to a further three years of supervised release in the community.
During this period, he will be on license and subject to strict conditions.
Any breach of these conditions could result in his immediate return to prison.
Angela Gray KC, representing Arshad, acknowledged that a custodial sentence was inevitable following his conviction.
She stated that while Arshad does not accept responsibility for the rape charges, he intends to use his time in custody to engage in rehabilitation programs and reflect on his actions.
As part of his sentence, Arshad was also placed on the sex offenders' register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and preventing further harm to the community.
