FOUR CARE WORKERS JAILED FOR ABUSE OF ELDERLY WOMAN AFTER FAMILY SET UP CAMERA
Four care workers have received prison sentences after the family of an elderly woman filmed them mistreating her.
The woman, aged 89 and suffering from vascular dementia, passed away in October 2023.
She was non-verbal and had been in a care home in Wolverhampton for nearly a year.
Her family observed bruising on her arms and noted a change in her behaviour, as she appeared more anxious about physical contact.
Concerned, they installed a hidden camera, which captured footage of the care assistants verbally and physically abusing her, confirming their suspicions.
The recordings from February 2020, spanning four days, showed the elderly woman being handled roughly, hit with a pillow, and treated without dignity or respect.
Following the report, three staff members were immediately dismissed, and three agency workers were suspended.
The video evidence was handed to police, who identified two more suspects.
In total, eight care assistants faced charges of willful neglect and ill-treatment.
Two court trials in Wolverhampton resulted in four defendants being acquitted and four being convicted and sentenced to prison.
The convicted individuals Ame Tunkara (33), Morounranti Adefila (43), Danny Ohen (39), and Bridget Aideyan (49) received sentences of four to six months, with Tunkara, Adefila, and Aideyan each serving four months and Ohen six months.
