2017: RUNAWAY OLDBURY RAPIST AMAR MEHRAJ JAILED AFTER EIGHT YEARS ABROAD
An individual from Oldbury has finally been jailed after evading arrest for eight years following a brutal gang-rape incident involving a teenage girl.Amar Mehraj, 29 years old and from Giles Road, was detained at Birmingham Airport when he tried to return to the UK from Pakistan in November.
He was charged with participating in the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Oldbury in July 2009.
The victim was taken to a location in Oldbury where she was given alcohol and drugs.
While she was unconscious, she was raped by Mehraj along with three other men.
She escaped the house afterwards and contacted police.
DNA scientific analysis linked Mehraj and other suspects to the crime scene, but he had previously fled to Pakistan.
The three other perpetrators received convictions and prison sentences in 2010.
Mehraj admitted to involvement in the assault during an earlier hearing, and on May 29, he was sentenced to nearly ten years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court.
He will also be registered on the Sex Offender Register for an indefinite time.
West Midlands Police’s Detective Constable Mark Timmins commented on the case, saying, “This was a horrific crime committed against a young girl who was incapacitated with alcohol and drugs and then sexually assaulted.
Our commitment to safeguarding young people is unwavering, and we treat all reports of sexual violence with the utmost seriousness.
This prosecution highlights our persistent efforts to bring offenders to justice, regardless of how long it takes.”
