AMANDA LEATHER FROM WAKEFIELD JAILED FOR SEXUAL GROOMING OF 15-YEAR-OLD BOY IN YORKSHIRE

In December 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving a 28-year-old woman from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, who was convicted of engaging in inappropriate and illegal conduct with a 15-year-old boy.

The incident involved the woman, identified as Amanda Leather, who exploited her position and the vulnerability of the young teenager for her own sexual gratification.

According to court reports, Leather and the teenage boy spent time together watching a film at her residence.

During this encounter, Leather smoked cannabis with the boy, an act that she later used to manipulate him.

Following this, she gave him a back massage and eventually got into bed with him, crossing boundaries that should never have been breached.

The court heard that Leather’s actions were not limited to these initial interactions; she later attempted to cover her tracks by destroying evidence.

Specifically, she tried to damage the boy’s mobile phone by putting it in water and removing the SIM card, in an effort to eliminate incriminating messages that could link her to the misconduct.

The case came to light after the victim, perhaps seeking to boast or share his experience, bragged to friends about what had transpired.

His parents, concerned about the nature of his disclosures, contacted the police, prompting an investigation.

During the subsequent inquiry, law enforcement officials recovered text messages and Facebook communications between Leather and the boy.

These messages revealed her explicit language, with Leather admitting to being 'horny' and having 'dirty thoughts' about the young teenager.

Such evidence painted a clear picture of her inappropriate intentions and actions.

When questioned in court, Leather denied any sexual contact with the boy.

She claimed that the messages attributed to her had been sent maliciously by the teenager himself, asserting that her phone had been hacked or used without her consent.

However, the jury was not convinced by her defense.

After a three-day trial, Leeds Crown Court found her guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child.

The presiding judge, Recorder Sophie Drake, sentenced Leather to five years in prison, emphasizing the gravity of her misconduct.

During her sentencing, Recorder Drake stated, "You have been found guilty by this jury on overwhelming evidence.

You, putting it mildly, messed with his emotions.

It may be that on his part he wanted to brag about what was happening with you, but at 15, he was not in a position to understand the long-term effects that this would have upon him.

You encouraged him to take cannabis by buying and smoking it with him.

What you were trying to do was make him an equal.

But he wasn’t an equal because he was at all material times a child.

You used him to satisfy your sexual needs.

You have made him out to be a liar and have portrayed yourself as the victim in all this.

But it is you who has been lying.

This relatively short-lived behavior was very much out of character, and you have lost that character in the most spectacular way." Leather’s legal representative expressed concern that she would struggle to cope with life in prison, highlighting her mental and emotional state.

The court’s verdict was supported by the jury, which consisted of eight women and four men, who unanimously found her guilty of the charge.

Following her conviction and sentencing, a man from the public gallery declared himself as Leather’s father, claiming, “I am Amanda’s father and she is only guilty of being a nice person,” a statement that drew attention to the emotional complexity surrounding the case.

In the aftermath of the trial, Detective Inspector Vanessa Rolfe of Wakefield’s Child Safeguarding Team issued a statement condemning Leather’s actions.

She emphasized that Leather was fully aware that her victim was underage and that she deliberately pursued a sexual relationship with him, providing him with alcohol and drugs to facilitate her grooming behavior.

DI Rolfe described the case as a clear example of sexual grooming, which the jury had rightly identified as such.

She also noted that upon her release from prison, Leather would be required to register as a sex offender, underscoring the serious consequences of such offenses.

Rolfe concluded by warning others about the severe sentences that offenders of this nature can expect, aiming to serve as a deterrent to similar conduct in the future.
